Well today I went to get my full license. I passed with no problem thanks to reading about the tricks the RTA don’t tell you. I can imagine the number of people who would fail the test… as it’s utter stupidity. I would like to outline the flaws to the tests and how to pass it.
The Test
The test is composed of two parts. The first section has 15 multiple choice questions each with 4 choices. This section tests your knowledge on how to drive safely and of good driving practices (e.g. the 3 second rule).

The second part of the test is the same as the Green P’s test whereby you have to respond to “hazards” in a series of video clips of real traffic from the driver’s perspective. There are 10 of these video clips.

Flaws
- The test supposedly tests your knowledge of road rules and good driving practices. The RTA believe that knowing a bunch of statistics on crashes, times when people become most fatigued and the chances of killing a pedestrian at 70 km/h compared to 60km/h are supposed to reflect your driving ability. How is knowing these statistics meant to judge your ability to drive safely? It doesn’t. It’s just a memory game that disadvantages those who have trouble remembering numbers.
- The Hazard Perception section requires you to respond to hazards in the video clip. For those who haven’t done this test it’s a bit of a psychology game. In nearly all cases when you are asked to “turn right when it is safe” you do NOT have to touch the screen at all. Those who haven’t done it before naturally feel inclined that they are required to tap the screen even if they are not meant to. This is therefore a unfair assessment of one’s ability to drive safely.
- The clips only last about 30seconds at the most and as those who have done the tests before know, that by the time the hazard appears it’s already too late to respond. The time to respond to a hazard on the screen is less than what it would be in real-life because of the difficulty seeing into the distance in a video clip that only focuses 10-20m ahead.
- The touch screen is sometimes slow to respond to your touch
- The videos showing traffic scenarios are compressed ridiculously… the level of detail is very low… i could see better looking through a cracked window.
How to Pass
- Read the handbook… if you are short on time read the ‘Key Points Summary’ of each section. The test actually requires you to know parts of the handbook.
- Learn all the main statistics from the handbook as these are tested in part A. E.g. causes of crashes and fatigue and crashes. Create a summary of all the main stats and learn them. The statistics will be outlined in the ‘Key Points Summary’ section.
- Have a run through of the practice tests for part A and part B
- When you are asked to press the screen when it’s safe to slow down, you can pretty much press it immediately (give it no more than 1 or 2 seconds)
- If you are asked to “press the screen each time you need to slow down” – press the screen at each point where you see a vehicle coming towards you, or at the first appearance of a corner (look out for the sign). Do not hesitate to slow down.
- When you are asked to turn right etc, in most cases DO NOT touch the screen. If you cannot see anything moving whatsoever then it might be ok to touch the screen but be hesitant. This can be tested in the practice that they give before the test (the second image above is from the practice test). There are a series of cars passing and you want to turn right. There is one safe gap in the clip. If you don’t touch the screen at all you don’t fail but you simply “could do better”… so this practice video is a good example on judging the acceptable distance for a turn in the real video clips.
- Take your time and be careful not to press the screen in quick succession as strange things may happen.
- Also refer to these tips
Personally, I think the Green P’s and the DQT are both revenue generators that do not accurately assess an applicant’s ability to drive safely.

Those are good tips Michael. I linked to them from my article.
Are you sure you have to touch the screen EVERYTIME a vehicle comes towards you? :S
Well only when you are asked to “press the screen each time you would slow down”…In the cases that were presented to me, I pressed the screen when i saw a vehicle approach. There were a few scenarios for this type of question that i can remember:
- A car and truck coming towards me. I pressed the screen when i saw them appear. The video continued to a corner. When i saw the sign i pressed the screen again.
- Driving behind two cyclists. I pressed the screen when i saw them and again when i felt the car was getting too close to them
I usually pressed the screen 2-3 times during these the slow down scenarios.
Remember it is usually never unsafe to slow down
All i can say is…thanx for putting this up mate. Just did the test and came back with my new 5 yr GOLD license. My chances of passing greatly improved after reading this.
Cheers.
Could please tell me if it matters where you touch the screen as to the hazard and does it make a noise or flash as stated in the handbook as I did not encounter this during the test.
Thanks For The Tips.
It doesn’t matter where you touch the screen… you aren’t identifying where particular hazards on the screen are, but rather you are pressing the screen when you should respond to them (or not). For example, you touch the screen when to slow down or when it is safe to turn right or overtake.
For me, the screen did flash (turned briefly a transparent white) and made a ding noise (if you have headphones).
Thank You for your help I am a fity-ish person and I am uncomfortable with any computer, but appreciate your advice.
Thanks Again.
No problem. I guess my main points for this test is that it’s important
A) to be hesitant when you have to turn right or overtake (most cases do NOT turn right or overtake unless it is clearly safe)
B) NOT to be hesitant to slow down (most cases slow down asap)
this is excellent information – again i am going for my ful license now i realise why i failed the first time not only was i 110% nervous i hesitated at a right hand turn – and i pressed the screen thinking i had to but then realised the big mistake i made. with all this great information and going to revise my notes handbook and pay particular attention to statistics hopefully i pass…. thank you again for these fantastic tips.
ok micheal i need your help! i went for my full license again and failed. i spoke to the counter lady and she said that i passed all part 1 15/15 and in part 2 the i slowed down when i didnt have too!
the scene was the following: You are on a 2 way street at 100km/h touch the screen on every occasion you would slow down. soon as the flim clip came into play a large massive truck passed me on the right then the clip kept place and a corner was truning right and i thought maybe i didnt have to slow down yet…
i touch it basically straight away every time to be cautious but i was OVER cautious which lead me to fail!
The test said that the only time i fail was when i slowed down BUT on every question that mentions touched the screen when you would slow down i touch it basically in 1 sec….. was that wrong?
If my undertsand is right ( and i said this to the RTA lady) i failed because i was over cautious and she said yes. what do you think.
some other points she main was out of 10 people that said the test she said about 2 might pass!
the test sucks because i study my arse of for over 3 weeks. i didnt think i could of been more prepared!
So i ended up renewing my green p’s…. so know the question i wish to ask you.
1)What can i study to pass the Harzard Perception Test – part 2 of the DQT test?
and the comment you made about hesitate when turning right or overtake and DONT hesitate to slow down – well i didnt hesitate one bit to slow down and i fail… hmm…
any help you can give would be muchly appreicated…
thanks Michael
Hi Jem,
Sounds like you aren’t having much luck with the test. I was in the same situation when i did my green p’s… the hazard perception test sucked. I guess this one is much the same. When slowing down, in general it is a good idea to slow down fairly quickly, but of course you need to use your own judgment in whether or not it is suitable to slow down. I mentioned that you should slow down in around 2secs… which is what I did, but the situations do change test-to-test and might have been different for yours. I guess what I can recommend is when slowing down, press the screen as soon as you consider that there is a hazard which in real life you might also slow down.
What you described in the truck situation, i would have slowed down when i saw the truck and again when i saw the corner. Don’t press the screen too many times. I only pressed the screen about a maximum of 3 times. Maybe next time, give it a little bit more time before you slow down and only press the screen at each interval you need to slow down (not repeatedly even if the car doesn’t appear to slow down)
Hope that helps…
Cheers,
Michael
thank you heaps michael. It feels so much better knowing that i wasnt alone you make things sounds soo easy – i just want to pass the flamin test. its riduculious because i know i am a cautious drive and i studied like i was going for a final exam.
I have another question when the question states:
“touch the screen on every occasion you would of slowed down” can i touch it more then once?
because i didn’t…… or does the question word it differently when they want you to touch it more then once.
I am sorry to be such a burden but their isnt really any help out there that i can access i mean how are you mean to study for part b of the test?
Thank you heaps for your info – next time i go i really want to here the words i passed! i am going to revise my notes and take a couple of weeks off fromthe pressure and hope for the best..
Thank for your tips.
Cheers,
Jem
Hey Jem,
Yep you can press the screen more than once in the “touch the screen on every occasion you would of slowed down” scenarios… in fact I believe you have to. The main difference between the green p’s test and this one is that in the green p’s test you only have to touch the screen once, whereas in this test you can touch the screen multiple times.
Cheers
well their is my probelm their – sorry taken a long time to reply just needed a break from the test situation. thank you for your help. Jem
Going for mine tomorrow, but havent had much time to study, due to job interviews (also have an interview like 2hrs before the test too tomorrow).
Only read so part 2 of the book, took notes of the summary sections, and hope i can ace the hpt part just from my driving knowledge.
Went for it 2 years ago, and failed so i renewed my licence. I suggest dont next time and keep trying to pass it, dont worry bout the costs, cause renewing the green p’s is extra cost. Once u get it, no more tests again, so just try and get it out of the way and put it behind you.
Passed – 1st go woo.
Cant remember much though but heres some.
1 question in the first part was bout BAC levels saying how many times more is 0.05 than 0.0.0 and was like more than 2.
and for the hpt’s play it safe basically. Never touch the screen more than once, i.e waiting to turn right just hit it once when its safe, not everytime when its safe. Also there are questions where u shouldnt touch the screen. When u think its not safe – dont touch.
Theres one where these 2 are riding a bike on a country track, and u had to touch when safe to overtake – well there wasnt basically cause of blind bends. Sure u could risk it but no its all about being safe.
also remember to use 3 second rule in the video tests, it helps alot deciding when right.
There are a few tips floating around saying to touch the screen straight away for the slow down hazard questions. I gave it around 3 seconds and it was fine as well. I would say this part was not so much a REACTION to hazards but more ANTICIPATION. If you haven’t seen any hazards and a few seconds has passed just press the screen. If you wait until you see something happening its a bit late, considering the lag. Anyway thx for the tips Mick.
i owe you a lot, guys.i got into the country while i had an overseas licence which i had held for 13months.This meant that on converting to nsw licence i got my green p’s without having to do the hazard perception. This left me at a disadvantage coz i never got to practice the hazard perception so i did not know what to expect until i saw your postings.THANX.i went for my dqt today and passed.
i have one tip to share with you, when travelling behind the cyclists and you are asked when it is safe to overtake,DON’T,becoz as soon as it appears safe to overtake the cyclists, there suddenly appears a double line which,of course, cannot be crossed.Good luck
hey mike i agree this test is a joke,i havent done it yet but going to tomorow.
The way you guys are talking about it im worried that i will fail. The rta dosent want you to pass the first time becouse this another revenue raising scheme by the rta, with a safe alibi that lots off people are dying on the road.So they get away with it.Ive been on my plates for four years now and i think its a f ing joke that i have to sit another revenue raising test can you help me with the more statistical questions and wot they would ask.
The statistical questions are from the handbook
Specifically, read anything under the “Keypoint Summary” sections. Most of the stuff in it is fairly obvious, but you might want to learn the stats. For example, these sort of ones are where they might catch you out:
“At least 14 per cent of all crashes involve
the driver being distracted by something.
Distractions that happen outside the vehicle
account for about 30 per cent of crash related
distractions.
Distractions that happen inside the vehicle
add up to about 36 per cent of crash related
distractions.”
HTH.
Cheers,
Michael
thanks mate so the key points summaries are a key to passing the first section.I know that the second section is all about being over cautiouse.ive delayed it because i really want to pass first go.cheers!!
I passed! first go! and thanks to the hints found here.
here is my contribution: you need to take all the questions as unique however you can get a good idea of what will happen from the statements said before the part 2 videos.
I had many right turn questions. where many were to not touch the screen as it was not safe to go. however i receive two instances where you had space to go. one was the same as the sample at the beginning (i dont know if the samples are the same for everyone…guesses are that they are) the 2nd was a night seen where the oncoming traffic was on a bend (and a three laned highway) i touched the screen twice were appropriate. (the thing that rocked me was that the stupid touch screen didnt register my touch during this, i retouch screen and was then annoyed that i may have to come back due to a fualt not of my own…but was lucky to re-react to the situation …. i should have a platinum license – ya that was a joke)
well its easy… i can only see the problem people would have is not studying enough or hesitance or nervousness… what i would do is remove all chances of being nervous…get there with plenty of time and dont worry too much about it as the first part is common sense once you have read the relevant part in the required doc. yes there are trick question thats the only time they attempted to catch you out….my response to this was to not answer the question till i was absoulty positive….
another question stated how often should you do your vision checks answer is 10sec (only option) book states every 8 – 10 sec
another is with pharmacy signs on your medicine….it stated bla bla bla… but the only appropriate response is to check with your doctor to see if you can drive.
also know the appropriate times to turn in intersection.
obviously do a comfortable amount of study and apply that made me study more
good luck to all.
ps. another video was of two cyclists on a country road with a bend. i didnt touch the screen the road is too narrow to over tack.
The first part is simple just study the book and you will pass. A question I wasn’t sure was;
When do most accidents occur?
a. Fine weather on a unsealed road in day time
b Rainy weather on a sealed road in day time
c Fine weather on a sealed road in day time
d. Rainy weather on a unsealed road in day time
Something like that.. and it is A.
It is real simple questions besides the occasional trick question, so if you read the book get the stats in your head know what is safe, you will ace it as they have four options however some of the questions will be absolutely wrong. I mean a toddler would pick it out. So its more of an elimination thing, remove the ones that are totally wrong and the correct one will come to ya
Part II.
Just want to let people know – you DO NOT have to touch the screen to slow down everytime a vehicle approaches. I got the one where I’m doing 100km/h and the truck comes by, however the only instance you need to touch the screen is when you see the sign on the side of the road indicating a corner. I also know this because I got a practice question in the beginning and it was a similar situation however I touched the screen when I saw a vehicle approach BUT when I got my feedback it said ” You only needed to touch the screen when the car seemed to get too close to the truck in front and Could of been better “.
I got alot of touch the screen when you would turn right, I only touched the screen twice for about 6 of them, so its true what you been seeing around. Most of the questions are designed so that you do not make a right turn or overtake.
- See the lady with the pram touch the screen to stop.
- See the two cyclist scenario”S” ( yes there are a few ), do NOT overtake.
- Driving on a narrow road you will suddenly see something moving to the right far ahead, touch the screen, this is a some car towing something turning out, if you do not touch the screen fast enough by the time you see it come out, it will be too late.
Hope you all pass.
What kind of gap do you need between traffic when turning right?
Well, normally there are not many, but when there is a safe gap – it will be obvious. I mean absolutely obvious. On my test sometimes when I saw the safe gap the video clip stopped and moved on to the next so yeah. You will hardly need to turn right but there are occasions so just stay alert.
hi Micheal this is a great website however i have one question is there any possibility of practicing the DQT test like the L’S DKT test on the internet before hand f so LET ME KNOW ASAP THANX
Hi, I passed today first go. Thanks for producing a useful site.
These are the questions and answers I had in
SECTION 1:
1. Most car crash costs goes to:
Answer – the long term care of injured people (24%)
2. If you have a high SSS you should:
Answer: Continue driving but be cautious when thinking about taking a risk
3. High Alcohol hrs:
Answer – Weeknights (Thu, Fri) and Weekends
4. Percentage of Fatigue-related crashes on country roads?
Answer: 75%
5. If you slow down from 70km/hr to 60 km/hr, you will travel:
Answer: >60km/hr distance. (This was easy…)
6. Blind spot is:
Answer: The area outside the car not covered by mirrors (common sense)
7. You need to go to page 70 of the handbook and study the two pictures to figure out what 3-second distance and 4-second distance looks like. I had an animation with 4-seconds
8. If you are driving in dark and foggy conditions, you should:
Answer: Travel four seconds or more
9. I had a diagram where you were driving behind a truck at night (broken lines and one lane), what would you do? and the options were:
a. Accelerate and driver closer, then drive slowly (i think)
b. Drive slowly only
c. Drive slowly and keep a fair distance from other vehicles
d. Drive normally. or keep same speed.(something like that)
Answer: I ended up choosing c. Correct me if im wrong
10. People who let their emotions dictate their driving are usually:
Answer: Young Males.
11. Crash research shows that drivers make a NEAR crash mistake every:
Answer: 800km. ( I stumped in this question, i couldnt remember the figures. Got it wrong, but hey.. goes to show they don’t expect you to get everything right to PASS)
12. Young male drivers tend to take risk when:
Answer: Passengers are around the same age.
13. If you experience fatigue:
Answer: You should only drive at times you are usually not asleep (this was a common sense one too)
14. I had a picture where it was two laned and up ahead there was an ambulance or truck (not sure) in the middle of the road (over broken lines) in the opposite direction. What should you do?
Answer: Slow down and drive more to left hand side
15. haha I wish i remembered the 15th question, but it was probably a silly one.
SECTION 2:
I had two videos with two cyclists in front of me, never overtook.. roads too narrow
I touched the screen a few times for the right turn ones.
I remember the one in the rain, didnt turn right
Keep an eye whether its a 50km, 60km etc zone which will be stated in the questions. This will help determine whether to slow down.
Im usually a hazards freak, so I didnt worry about this.
Good Luck!! Hope this helps
DQT – yay passed the second time thanks to this site.
part (i) harder than the first time
Q. What is a head check?
Q. How many kilometers travelled before someone is likely to have a near accident?
A. I think it was 800km (check the book)
Q. A young male driver is likely to take risks when?
A. other young male passengers of the same age are present
Q. what is a driver with a high “Sensation Something Test” more likely to do?
A. I think it was drive without a seatbeat
part (ii)
in all the Turn Right at the intersection questions when the video initially
starts rolling and their is a clear and safe gap, in every instance i let the first set of cars on screen pass through before considering whether to complete the Right Turn
damn this DQT, failed 1st try.
hopefully will pass next time after reading these tips.
went for my blacks today for the 3rd time and failed again.. The DQT is so anoying i was so sure that i passed its such a stupid test just revenue raising!
I got every question right in the first part everytime.
I always got the exact same questions everytime i took the test and failed each time on the exact same questions.
I got mostly questions where you have to touch the screen when its safe to turn right I hsrldy touched the screen. another was when is it say to overtake the bikes which i got right too. I had a question where your driving along a two way road and theres an oncoming truck and a motorbikle that atempts to overtake the turck.. i touched the screen just as the bike pulled out…
The parts i failed on was slowing down on the winding roads… first was in the day time 2 way road. I touched the screen before the corner when i saw the sign indicating the corner and the other question was similair just at night. I think io touched the screen to late last 2nd time i did the test and this time i think to early. its such an anoyoing test i mean i knwo when to slow down when im acctually driving btu this simmulation its hard to judge everything, i was so sure that i had passed.
Did the test today.. I was nervous but got everything right no problems wasnt even shown what needs to be improved.. I dont think they bother at castle hill did HPT there also 2 years back seemed fine.
If u summarise the main points in the book you should be fine, had questions on 25% accidents on metropolitan roads.. and that sorta area.
“I had a question where your driving along a two way road and theres an oncoming truck and a motorbikle that atempts to overtake the turck.. i touched the screen just as the bike pulled out…” I had this question too as soon as i saw the truck, was about 2 seconds away just b4 the bike came out i pressed the button. (They show the same clips but add an extra thing or two in each situation). Theres on the vic roads website they show simulations of similar situations which u can download.
On the turn right questions they show turning right the same situation during different weather conditions, such as night time dark day night very similar to the build up your skills situations, so I recommend doing this. One question was based at night time on a highway on a bend, you can see the lights of the cars through the bushes so you can turn when you see the lights far away..
Anyway good luck to everyone that does the test, this was a good read and the test can be pure luck but make sure you know your right turns and slow down when a vehicle is approaching.. or your car starts accelerating and the space cushion with the car infront decreases.
Thanks to reading people’s advice, I passed on my first go. I was petrified going into the exam for Part II but it’s very similar to the green Ps just longer.
Here’s some of my (poor) recollections:
Part I:
Q. Picture where ambulance/police is driving right in the middle of two opposing lanes and coming towards your vehicle. What should you do?
A. Brake and move to the left.
(there was a “slow down” option but the ambulance was quite close so you had to move to the side)
To be honest, all the other questions were right from the book and already mentioned by others.
Part II:
- Had about 6 “when is it safe to turn right”, most in good conditions, 1 at night and 1 whilst raining. Only turned right in 3 if these (2 day 1s and the night 1- after you wait for all the cars and don’t see any oncoming carlights around the slight bend/trees).
- Driving in a tunnel with 2 lanes. When to slow down- when car too close with vehicle in front AND when car gets close to van in left lane because the van will indicate shortly afterwards and jump lanes to be in front of you.
Good luck to all!
Going for my test at 12pm tomorrow, I’ve read over all the stuff here and hopefully it will help me out.
I’ll post back here with anything I remeber about my test (pass or fail…hopefully pass!)
I’ll keep checking here till before I do the test, my trouble lies in the first section (I’m quite confident about the second part) I’m not that good at remebering this kinda stuff, so if anyone could give me some more examples or hints or something that would be awesome
Cheers
-Mike
Passed!
Well I can’t offer much more than what’s already been said here. I found the test rather easy, only had to think hard on about 2 questions (mainly because of wording of said questions).
The second half is almost exactly the same as the HPT, I only got “when would you slow down” and “when would you turn right” questions so it was pretty much a sinch. Unlike most here though I only didn’t touch the screen at all for one of the situations. All I did was keep a clear head and act how I would in real life and I got through all right.
In regards to the first section, reading the handbook is almost a must. I copied some of the main points and summaries from the book and made a 9 page word document to read over before I did the test.
I’ve uploaded it to the internet in .doc and .docx format to help anyone else out who might be having trouble with this section of the test.

Good Luck People!
Hey, just wanted to say this website is great…my test was basically what everyone has said already just wanted to add for part 1: i had the diagram of the 360 degree view around the car and it asked what colour is the blind sport area, just study the book and u should be fine…
part 2: dont be nervous, read question ver carefully and use the sound… i had touched the screen to turn right for day and night, with the right turns at night i touched it twice and twice for day (huge gaps)..when it asks you to touch the screen when to slow down you do it when you see (a) pedestrians (b) cars parked (c) car reversing out of drive way (d) if you see car’s break light coming on in front of you (e) indicator (f) too close to car in front (g) side streets (h) curves or bends ( dont worry about cars in the opposite direction: would you slow down for them in real life unless there abit over ur lane)…they are not testing how qickly you press the screen to slow down, i was told its if you spot the HAZARD…you are allowd 3 errors in part 2
I went for my HPT for Green P’s yesterday but failed due to computer problems as they were unable to find my test results after i had finished- not cool! So i really dont know how i went as i didnt get any feedback due to the fact that it had for some reason not been recorded onto their systems. Anyway what i was wondering is after each clip a message came up saying “did you touch the screen or ” did you not touch the screen”…. is this normal? Also, i had a lot of slowing down videos and turning right. When i pushed the screen for it to slow down well in the clip the car didnt even slow down and continued the speed it was travelling in the start. Was i on a crazy computer?
Any help would be great as i need to resit the test again.
Thanks!
Just had my test today and thankfully passed. The tips here have been helpful, though they did have the side-effect of giving me more anxiety LOL. Anyway, Part 1 was pretty simple, a lot of common sense questions/eliminate-the-obviously-wrong answers and you’ll be fine. The ones that had me thinking included the car following animation – the quality’s crap so I was back and forth deciding on 3-4 sec. So keep those images from the book in mind. And with most contributions to crashes, I was back on forth on alcohol and driving at night (ultimately went with alcohol).
Part 2 was more of a worry, because of everything I’ve heard about touching the screen too many times, too early, too late, etc. etc. I had an overtake one, a few right turners but mostly slow down ones. The overtake one was the usual cyclists – there was a seemingly safe gap a ways before the bend, but I played it safe and never touched. Right turners – just wait for a nice big gap and you can turn. The timing of the clips usually means that you’ll get in 2 turns at most before it ends anyway, so just play it super-safe. The slow down ones were the most ambiguous. Since the car doesn’t actually slow down or anything, it’s difficult to tell whether your touch registers too early or late. In most cases I touched twice – eg. when someone opened their door, I touched and as I almost pulled alongside them, touched again.
No actual feedback from the test was given; but that’s how I did it, so I hope that helps anyone…!
Just had my test early morning yesterday and passed. Thank you very much for the contribution and editor who put up this website. I manage to find it at the last minutes before my exam and have a scan thru and able to get thru it.
Part 1 of my test is basically all common sense, as the previous writer, no stats questions at all. Just take your time to do the test and dont be nervous.
Part 2, the nerve recking part, I have 4 slowdown clip and 6 turn right clip which include 2 night scene clip.
The slow down sceen, 1 is driving behind the 4wd with a P-Plate and travelling @ 50KM, Touch the sceen when you see 4wd brake, and when the 4wd slow down, make sure you touch the screen straight cos the 4wd will signal and turn left just after 2 second.
The others slow down clip, when see the bend, slow down. I have one is a night scene, it’s a bit like driving princess highway at night time peak hour and it’s raining. Touch the screen when the car in front brake.
For the right turns clip, I hardly touch the screen, Only 1 night scene which no traffic at all after one car had pass, and one there is no traffic at all. Thank you for all the comment ..only turn when there is a BIG GAP.
Once again, Thank you very much for the Editor and the contributors who put up their expriences for the DQT and it was very helpful.
Good luck for all ppl who are going for thier DQT. Just stay relax ( I know it’s hard) but it does help.
hi,
i just sat for my medium rigid test and failed the first section. I have lightly read the heavy vehicle book though have not read the driver handbook. I currently have a full license and have had it for about 8 years (never sat for any of the recent updated P license tests, hazard test etc.) what would you recommend to study apart from the heavy vehicle book to pass this test and any other tips that you can point out please.
Hey Buddies,
I have my test tomorrow. Before I read this I was bit confident, now feeling bit nervous. Anyway I will follow all your hints and let you guys know asap. I am confident that I will pass! When I finish my test, I will post all the q’ns for the future buddies. Good luck to me!
I am back with a good news! I got my full license in first go now. some of the q’ns in Part 1 were very similar to the one you guys mentioned before in the previous posts. they were mainly from speeding(DQT handbook 64-69), alcohol related matters(DQT handbook page 38-40). There was a question about scanning for hazards at 60km/h zone is 12 secs…..lot of common sense q’s too! most of the questions, you can pass if you blame ‘young male drivers! I didn’t had any questions about that statistics.
Alright..next part is bit horrible actually! I was soooo panic when doing that part! Read the question part very carefully. Especially note the situation like right turn or slow down issues and speed limits.etc. You never won’t have any clues that you done well or not during the test!..So make sure to do your practice test properly. I had about 4 right turn q’s and 6 slow down q’s.
All the right turns were quite good. Only two of them I didn’t need to touch the screen. For the rest, I had to do when there was enough gap left! one was in the dark background. In the practice q’n I noted that when I didn’t touch the screen when there was a gap and other vehicle was coming from a top of the hill.. it said ‘I could have done better in that situation..means you have to touch the screen when there is a gap that you think is right to turn. Just think about real situation
For slow downs, luckily I didn’t got any suicidal ladies or cyclists…instead lot of curves, bends, side roads, petrol shop driveways etc. I had to touch the screen at least 3 times in each scenario. So remember, when you see a brake light or indicators of the front vehicles, TOUCH the screen. you can see the vehicle braking one by one.
Finally, I suggest everyone to read the handbook first, not only the summary, bu the contents under speeding, alcohol, fatigue and safe gaps. Also practice Vic Roads demo tests under Hazard Perception Test( first you have to download that in the computer. It is very real videos and you will get an exact idea of what to do. I have found that link when googled it. RTA is doing good things to save our lives, I don’t think it to raise the revenue. Please don’t blame them. Think about the good things they do…who built and maintain our beautiful efficient hwys, bridges and tunnels. All are good for us and our future generations!! But they could have done something better than this game test like one more on road testing or advanced knowledge testing etc. So don’t forgot to study the book for good results. Once again thanks for everyone who involved in this discussion. Good on you mates. I wish you all the best!
I’m going for my DQT next monday do we have to pass all 15 question in part 1 and part 2?
What if i dont “touch the screen” in part 2 for all question would i still fail the DQT test?
Your help would be much apprecated. Thanks
Just wanted to thank everyone, this website helped me heaps!
I knew what to expect going in!
Got them on my first go a couple weeks back!
Part one was Ok i guess.. i had issues with my touch screen, but take ur time and think clearly if your the slightest bit unsure skip the question and come back to it. You really need to study for part one otherwise you wont pass.
For part two it will all come naturally its as if u are driving, just use your common sense.. ask yourself would u turn realistically?
I didn’t pass.
I didn’t even get half the questions stated on here or the booklet..which annoyed me…anyways…..Section two bummed me right off…I kept pressing the screen evrytime i saw a hazard..(I think thats where I failed)…* straight face* and the screen sometimes froxe up..huh? lol how dare thee!
I didnt get many ‘right turn’ scenes -they’re the obvious ones..and easiest to pass!
..
anywho, better luck next time
Bye guys.
I went for my test last Friday and passed first go. This website helped so much though – I was very prepared going in. Had a lot of the right hand turn scenarios. Most of the time I didn’t touch the screen. Didn’t have any suicidal ladies or any of the curves in the road. The others were just the slowing down ones and one overtaking. The stupidest thing with the overtaking situation was there were double lines and it was a high pedestrian area so obviously you could not overtake the bicycle riders.
The general knowledge were simple – no stat questions which I studied for.
I am going for the test tomorrow kinda nevrous 2nd time as in my 1st i didnt do too well. However i am ready this time around I hope i dunt get alot of stat questions
im pretty good on my common knowledge and should be okay in the obvious questions.
I am back with good news and tips
The computer test was rather easy altho what i studied hardly came up. Mostly just use your skills to remeber key points , the rest is pretty much common knowledge.
As for the touch sceen test most right hand turns asked to be performed i basically just didnt touch anything i found the touch screen easy i think the test is random so you really dont know what questions you might be getting.
Most important is to read the book over 3-4times and remeber the Key Point Summary .
Good Luck guys 1hr befor doing the test skim thur the pages that seemd to help alot tho i was hella nervous i managed to pass!
Just got back from passing DQT first time. Common sence will prevail. If you read the book the night before you take the test you should pass. Every question i got is in the book and on this website. HPT part was easy, just dont turn right if you see a car or haedlights. just brake on everything. JUST DONT BE NERVOUS ITS EASY
I just passed the DQT test and i have this website to thank.
It was quite easy.
Part 1, multiple choice, was pretty much common sense. However, in order to pass, you do need to read the book.
Part 2 was exactly the same as the P2 test. I found it relatively easy. There were many times when i did not have to touch the screen. A lot of them were for right hand turns, especially in the rain. I had a couple like that. There were a few shots of the bicycle riders, asking you to touch the screen when it is safe to overtake. It isnt safe to overtake when there are double lines and oncoming traffic. Make sure you take a good look at the traffic conditions, especially the traffic lights. I had a scenario where no one was moving, but it was because the traffic lights were red.
I passed, and i am over the moon.
However, there was a guy sitting next to me. He started after me and finished at the same time. We both got our results and he failed. I was listening to the lady tell him which areas he failed on. He failed on pretty much all the multiple choice questions, because he did not study. He failed the second part too because he touched the screen too many times. The on-screen instructions before the test tell you to only touch the screen for the one hazard once, as the screen registers it. He thought that because the car didnt stop, he had to keep pressing it. In the end he thought it was a fault to the computer, but it wasnt. In part 2, you just have to be cautious!
I studied a lot of statistics for part 1, and the only statistic was the ‘near crash’ question. The question about every how many kilometres does a near crash occur? The answer is 800km.
Be cautious and study, and you will be fine. I studied on and off for a few days and i was fine.
Good Luck Everyone!!
Hi Michael. Just wanted to say thanks for putting such a good website up. It is so good to read other peoples issues and opinions when it comes to this test. I have studied and studied and I can always get 15/15 multiple choice questions right, but always fail on Part II of the test. Well afte reading everyone’s feedback, I went to the RTA today and I passed and I am soo stoked.
)
Thanks so much everyone for your help!
AFter reading this website, i was lucky enough to pass on my first try. The test was not as hard as i thought, with no hard stats questions etc. Just general trends, which with a bit of common sense and critical thinking, could generally be worked out on the spot (even if you had only lightly read the manual).
The videos were as mentioned, but alot shorter than i expected. I didnt press the screen on many occasions.
Good luck to everyone!!
This website helped so much!! Thank you everyone! I went for my full license last week but failed because I felt compelled to turn right at every single opportunity (i pressed the screen about 4 times in one video). After reading this site, however, I realised that you really don’t need to at all, and in most cases you don’t turn right….and so I passed on my second go!
I had a really strange last 2 questions- they were essentially repeats of each other: you’re driving past a park/factory with lots of parked cars on both sides on the road. 3 pedestrians try to approach their car and there’s one red car that turns onto your road, and then turns into right. I pressed the screen about 7 times for when I was going to slow down, and the second video was 2 seconds shorter, but exactly the same!! I thought it was a trick question!
Anyway, another website I recommend is here, some members have such a good memory that they can recite the question and correct answer. SUPERB!
http://www.bhatt.id.au/blog/tips-for-passing-dqt-nsw-driving-test-p2-to-unrestricted-licence/
LAst but not least, the best advice I found was from the site above, and it is to imagine that you are driving in a brand new car which you just purchased yesterday. You’ll drive much more carefully! GOOD LUCK EVERYONE! =)
hi michale how r ya look i need da qestions 4 da dqt test because i am faling i no every fin but i dont understand dem so u fink u can help me. i would really apricatit if u did thanks
Hi Aiman,
What don’t you understand specifically? I don’t have all the questions, as the RTA would never provide them, however most are noted above. If you read through the comments you might gain a good understanding. I also reiterate that you read through the handbook and learn the statistics.
If you’re continually failing it’s probably beneficial that you make sure you have a well-formed understanding of why you have failed and ensure, before you go into it again, you know the answers to your mistakes. Otherwise you’re just wasting money and that’s never a nice feeling!
Also there is a lot of value in writing proper English
Cheers,
Michael
oohh yer thxx for urr helpp i keep failingg i dono yy ive failed 5 timezzz sooo far lmaoo
well michael i just wated 2 tell ya dat there is 3 parts dat i am studying 4 the exams n if i was wadering if any 1 can help me in da parts dat i am failing in coz i really wanna pass n not keep failing coz it is a very bad feeling so if there is any 1 out there dat can help me can u plz let dem no bout me thanks michael get bak 2 me wen u hav time k thanks……
Hi Aiman,
I can’t help you unless you tell me what you’re failing on. Please tell me these and I can steer you on the right direction.
Cheers,
Michael
Hey guys! I passed first go!
All I did was read the key points summary and Tine’s Q&A.. helped alot.
I had alot of “touch the screen when you need to slow down.”. I pretty much touched the screen after 2 seconds and had 4 right turns in Part II. 3/4 of the right turns I didn’t have to do anything.
Hope this helps you guys.
They should give it to us 4 years on the road spending $5000 to $7000 a year on 4 tyers and a seat no matter what u drive go to school go to work what more do thay whant more hours ?
money, money, money. green slip what for theres insurance 3thrd party should be free if its stolen bad luck buy anther shit box it will be cheaper.
what will it be when i have kids will it be affodable.
Hi,
I wanted to know do we need to touch the screen to slow down if we see parked cars and side streets?
Kind Regards.
A speedy response from you Michael would be appreciated.
Thanks.
One more question I have is that would you touch the screen to slow down if you see oncoming cars?
Would you touch the screen to slow down if you see a parked car in the driveway?
Passed my test today (first time)!!!
Hi guys,
I passed my DQT first go on sat!! Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who contributed to this site – it really helped.
Don’t freak out too much about the test. The book makes it sound like the test is going to be really hard, but it’s not. They basically hand the answers to you in the multiple choice – as other people have said here, just eliminate the obviously wrong answers and you’ll get it.
For example, one question I got was “What is sleep debt?”.
a) was the correct answer – the difference between the amount of sleep you get and the amount of sleep you need, b) was so lame “Bills that accumulate while you sleep” and the other two were equally as stupid. Just make sure you read through the book and key points and you’ll do fine. And take your time reading the questions/answers before submitting you answer.
I was worried about getting statistics questions, but only had 2: % of fatal fatigue related crashes on rural roads (75%) and if you’re travelling 5km over the speed limit of 60km, how much more likely are you to have a crash (twice as likely).
The HPT part was pretty easy too – had 2 overtaking questions with cyclists – do not overtake. Had mostly right hand turn questions – 2 in pouring rain with tonnes of traffic and low visibility – do not turn. One stopped at red lights – obvious do not turn. A couple of “touch the screen when you’d slow down” – like it’s been said here – touch the screen pretty much immediately and I had to touch it 2 – 3 times for each scenario.
Good luck everyone!
i passed this morning. Thankyou to everyone on this site. only info i can offer that hasn’t been mentioned (i dont think) was one of the slow down videos in part 2. Towards the end of the clip you see a car approaching from a side street to the right. Press the screen obviously but at the last minute the car pulls out in front of you so be sure to press the screen again quickly.
All the best for those who are yet to take it.
Just wanted to say thanks for putting the site and the tips up. I had previously failed the test twice about 5 years ago (the HPT part) and was so stressed because I didn’t know what I had done wrong that I never re-attempted until today. The tips here were a great help – for the bicycle overtaking questions it was pretty obvious it was a bad idea to overtake (double lines, windy roads, crests etc – put your hands on your lap), for the right turn questions I only turned once out of about six questions (and when I did turn there was no car visible), I find the slowing down questions the hardest – I got about 3 of these and each time I pressed the screen as soon as I saw the hazard (I am still unsure whether this is the right thing to do but I scored 100% so hopefully that was the correct response – hazards I can recall were an old man crossing the road, a car approaching on my right). I think I got a relatively easy set of HPT questions compared to last time so I guess sometimes you just have to sit several times until you get a string of reasonable scenarios. Hopefully the RTA will eventually realise that it needs to give some decent practise questions so people are less stressed going into test and so can genuinely demonstrate their skill.
hey michael i failed again ur information doesnt seem to help me at all….
thank for nothing
lol not his fault u failed
i did the test today after looking over the book last night and passed first go. Firstly, with the verbal questions take your time – apply a bit of logic and you will get through about 80% of them on that alone. For the rest, i wrote maybe half an A4 page summary of those “Key Points” areas in the book and learnt those. I think i probably got all 15 right.
As for part 2 it is slightly more difficult than the HPT but you just have to find a way to translate your real driving to the screen (which I understand is difficult for some).
Don’t overtake (pretty much ever) – they will not penalise you as overtaking is a form of risk taking and is therefore technically not necessary most circumstances.
Another I had was a scenario where there was a semi trailer to my right hand side and another one in front of me and I had to tap when to slow down – for that one the point is to realise that because you are blocked to your right, if the semi in front of you stops or does something stupid you are unable to get out of the way. Therefore, you should slow down the second you see the semi trailer appearing on your right.
The other ones i had for part 2 were alot of right hand turns – its somewhat difficult to judge on a computer screen how far the oncoming cars are from the vehicle, but for most in dry conditions there’s a spot where you are able to turn.
Overall, the most important suggestion I can give is the use of logic, a bit of study of that book and translating your road skills to the computer!
I am just about to go for my DQT, I’ve studied the handbook well and I could not agree more with the ploy of generating money.
If I hated anything more than failing the P2 test it would be the RTA personel who’s faces light up knowing that you will have to fork out another $40 to rebook the test. The once sour old gargoyles now turn into the bubbly and cheerful sales reps you may find at a clothing store flogging their over priced goods to the customer who’s knees go week at the sight of a simple smile.
Great article. Def a RTA cash cow. The RTA have recently become very commercial – new tests, higher fees, new number plates, annual fees on most number plates (even non personalised one’s like euro plates)… It seems that the NSW government is putting pressure on these government enterprises to pull their own weight – become profitable – when in essence they should really be about driver safety.
I think if they were serious about road safety they would scrap the multiple touch screen knowledge tests (yes there is merits in raising awareness of dangers and stats)but being in a car and being shown that if you go that extra 10 km/h and that causes you to run over the orange cone that would be a kid or obstruction on the road – that would be far more beneficial – and could even be cheaper!
I found this site when I was looking for study hints and it really proved helpful. I passed first go. I thought I wouldn´t pass as I was waiting for the RTA lady to tell me the results though due to a couple of trick questions which had two or more correct answers in some case.
The ones I remember are:
What are “low alcohol hours”?
The answer I chose was during daylight hours on weekdays. I was almost tripped up reading it fast because the book details HIGH alcohol hours and I nearly chose the Thursday, Friday, Saturday and weekends option.
Where do you have to be more aware of cyclists and motorcyclists?
One way roads, two way roads, pedestrian crossings or intersections…
Honestly I don’t remember seeing that anything related to this in the handbook (correct me if I’m wrong). I chose intersections because there are more directions to consider
What are the chances of ending up in hospital from a crash as opposed to getting booked?
Lower, higher, about the same, getting eaten by a shark
I remember clearly in the handbook that they talking about getting killed being 2000 times less risky that being booked but nothing about ending up in hospital with injuries. I chose the shark option. Which just goes to show the quality of the questions they ask after making you study for 4 – 5 hours of your life aren’t exactly worthy of your time.
The Second part of test I was scared about because I remember failing the HPT the first time around. The key honestly is to not over take the bicycle riders because it would endanger the life of the rider…only choose to turn right when you would in real life, and by that I mean don´t take risks…and slow down the moment you think something strange is about to pull out of the road on the questions which ask you to slow down.
I think the concept of the DQT is good but in practice it will in no way make you a better driver. I think it would be better to do a second practical test than a computer test or send people to a driving school to learn how to handle difficult conditions better….
Good luck and be safer drivers. I hate people who cut me off. Don´t be another impatient Ahole just to save a few seconds. Driving is a serious thing and your life is at risk everytime you do something without thinking.
Hi, gedday Micheal, I found this site when I was looking for study hints and it really proved helpful. thank you Micheal for such great job you has done. I failed the DQT test for the first time I had it , but after studying yr site, I went for my second test and I pass, coz I wasn’t feeling novies at the second time afer studying yr site, may God be with you and always give you wisdom and knowledge to continu yr good work.
I just passed my test on my first attempt and wanted to say a big thank you. Here are some of the things I remember:
Part 1
i) At What speed do most crashes occur
60km
ii) Red and blue car are shown, how far apart are they
4 s
iii) Picture between two trucks, what should you do
slow down to increase you space cushion
iv) High alcohol hours
v) Who are most likely to get into alcohol related crashes
Young M
vi) Most common crash type in new full licence holders
rear end
Part 2
- I had 2 in 50km urban zones where I had to press 6-7 times. There were lots of people, parked cars doors opening, I was driving behind a red car which braked etc
- tunnel – truck on L indicates to turn into your lane
- Don’t overtake cyclists
- R turns: I didn’t turn R in most of them
- country road: in the distance you can see something (press to slow down), it’s a truck and you drive past the truck, a guy walks out so slow down again
Good luck guys! The test is a lot better than I thought it would be.
hey guys! great tips on here il be going for my licence today at 12.00pm and its 10.50am now north syd rta, ive read the whole DQT book once and highlighted all the key points summarys so i should be alright
hope i pass, aint really good with numbers but anwyays some ppl have said theyve had statistics and some havnt we’l have to wait and see wish me luck ehh
liz
hey guys just passed the test first go today just like to say THX HEAPS for such valuable information contributed by everyone on the site i couldnt hv done it without all the tips provided…MUCH APPRECIATED
i didnt get many stat qu’s for part 1, most of the qu’s were stated by others b4 me anyway, one they wasnt mentioned b4 was:
Qu) Why are infant pedestrians more likely to cause hazards on the roads? (or something like that)
Ans) coz they dont hv the road skills and perceptions of dangers adults hav
the wording is not exact but u get the point
as with the HPT part, just be cautious like everyone else has said, and with the turn right questions dont turn unless theres a massive gap, if anything is blocking ur view dont turn, and the two cyclers again dont overtake as everyone has said, just keep ur cool and rmb to slow down whenever the car infront brakes, or when pedestrains are abt, and when important signage is present (i slowed at a sign with a parent holding a child)
GOOD LUCK GUYS and THX AGAIN!
Hey Guys,
I took the test and encountered one hard question to me.
Which are you less like to be injuried in when it crashes.
Bus
MotoCycle
MotoCycle and Car
Car???
Hi michael…I followed your steps red the book, summary points and what not…..i attempted the test 7 times and i still failed… its mainly on the questions……I have an intleqctual disability and i have troubles understanding the questsions and choices of answers they give me, they dilibertly confuse the shit outta ya so u can fail….I also read the book over and over again and still not sinking in….could you please e-mail me a way that i could pass both sections without failing?….coz i followed your steps and it still didint help. I wish they could just do another driving test that would be alot better….i’m very good with practical side.
Hey Rami i know what u mean ive had trouble with it to each time u go the questions change
I know ay Shane….its really bugging me hardcore….the book don’t do squat for me…they should do it like the DKT online practice same with HPT..
Umm it may sound qierd but lol if anyone has the list of questions for the DQT that would help us study it alot better could you email them to me please? daora_heat1984@Hotmail.com i find its teh best way for me to study reading summaries over and over isnt helping me done that 2 weeks straight and failed again/
yeah true that bro
its very annoying i went yestday for the test failed
they dont tell u your mistakes they just put what section you fail and u read over and still fail
i dont get it. its started to give me the shits $36 is alot of money just for computer test
should be $10 bucks atleast
It’s bullshit…..they should tell you what questions you had wrong.
It’s annoying me too…I tried to study both ways, summary points and reading the book and half of the answers that are in the test isnt in the book.
Well i just got back from failing the DQT
All they would tell me is i did well in the first part but got 2 questions wrong – but wouldnt tell which ones!! Why not?? I Have no idea which ones i got wrong.
And the second part – they say “you pressed the screen two many times” what the?
I have absolutely no idea how this test has anything to do with how you drive.
And for me to walk away not knowing what i got wrong, i find it hard to even know where to start again so they don’t snap up another $36 from me plus an hour our of my working day.
I know how u feel amy…. all they do is tell what section u failed in and how many questisons wrong but no what ones.
I’ts bullshit if u ask me…..I heard in WA theres no test for the full licence just pay money take photo and done…. i wish its like that here.
I passed the DQT first go today =)
I think the blog and the comments made it appear harder than it actually was. For anyone doing the test, as long as you read the handbook summary points and aren’t too rusty with driving, you will be fine.
The first part asked about what risks there were and what would you do in certain situations. My main concern was that I had to retouch the screen multipe times as the sensors were sometimes non responsive.
The second part covered day, night, rain, country roads, cyclists, etc scenarios. The best thing to do is remain cautious. Every now and then I would find an appropriate time to turn right. Sometimes it would not be safe to do anything and the clip would be over in 10 seconds. I also had to watch out for hazards and would touch the screen whenever cars changed into my lane or breaked suddenly
hi michael thanks for putting this sight on i went yesterday and passed third time lucky . your sight was very helpfull. last time i went i got 1 wrong in the first section and 2 in the 2nd and still failed this time i got 1 wrong in each section and passed. its a very frustrating test i was sure i failed again, but was surprised to pass and very reieved as you dont no until the lady at the desk tells you. the maim thing is to read the book and summary points. and read your sight thanks again.
thanx mic good site helped passed 3rd time good luck rami study this site will help u cuz
I failed the test 3 times 2 years ago so I ended up renewing my P2 licence. It annoyed the hell out of me. Today, I passed the test. Thanks forthe tips in this site.
I always read the whole book. However, sometimes they can have questions which really require you to remember little things. e.g
Question: Who invlove the most in alochol related crashes?
A, men
B, woman
C, men and woman
D, woman over 50
( This is NOT exactly how the question written) Anyway, the answer is A.
I read the whole book but I did not remember details like this. I thought it was C, luckily I only got this question wrong so i still passed.
2 years ago, i always had trouble with section 2, coz I had no idea how many times I should touch the screen and how soon I should touch. e.g When there was a massive truck in front of me, I would touch to slow down and it did not seem to slow down then i kept touching, then I ended up failing. Thanks for the comment in this site. I pretty much just kept what other people said in mind, and did what they suggested at the test. I passed. Thanks god. Thanks Michael, you save me keep paying $36 for rta.
Hi Guys,
Just came back from the test and Passed first Go. I am sooooooooooooo happy. I was sooo scraed to take the test, i felt like i was about to puke, but went in, prayed & GOT IT!!
I got alot of common sense questions, no stats at all. Part 2 was easier than part 1,
Part 2:
i had 6 when is it safe to turn – i turned on 2 occasions, the rest i didnt even touch the screen.
i had when is was safe to overstake – NEVER OVER take, let the clip finish without touching the screen.
& then i had 2 questions on when to slow down – i pressed it twice when the car was getting too close, then when the car breaked. Bascially the same question.
I want everyone to know, dont freak out, its really easy. All you have to do is read the book, for the first part (i had no stats) , and the before you get each question in part 2 have a minute break b4 you click to start the film rolling, it helped, i put myself in the situation and pretended i was driving, and when it the film started, just focus.
Thanks Michael, you website to fantastic – and thanku to eveyone else who placed tips on this website!!
THANKSSSSSSSSS!!!
Hey i sit the test tomorrow at ten am. Ive passed all these tests first go (to now) So i’ll see how i go. Much of what ive read corresponds with what i know from DKT & HPT. Ill let you guys know how i went tomorrow
Hey guys,
I have passed my dqt and want to thank everyone who has contributed to this site! I found part 2 frightening, the difference between right and wrong was vague. During the practice questions I did a “press screen to slow down” type.
***
I was travelling on a freeway behind a truck, on my right there was an additional truck passing by. I touched the screen once to slow down because I was sandwiched, then the car kept moving forward towards the truck infront and i imediately hit the screen again (however it was a little late). What made it confusing, was did my first hit of the screen already register as slowing down for the truck infront or did it register as avoiding the sandwiching. The practice question told me it was too late, so I repeated the question again and ignored the first sandwiching and only slowed down when the car got closed to the truck infront. (that response was “good” for the test.)
***
anyone want to clarify this for people who are about to do the dqt?
Also this is a word doc I made of all the questions mentioned on this site by others, please add with new questions and re-post!

Dear Michael,
I failed the test two years ago because I weren’t sure where to touch the screen when it is safe to turn right or slow down. I just touched the screen in front of me but some one said you have to touch the screen where you want to turn, for instance, if one wants to turn right & it’s safe to do so, one has to touch the street on the right hand side (not in front of the car). Is it right? Please let me know as soon as you can as I have to sit for the test again in two months time (I renewed for another two years after I failed).
Thank you for your help.
Best wishes
Lisa
Need help!
I have several years experience driving, and still can’t pass this stupid test. I failed it twice in the same day. Almost tempted to try a third time, but ended up walking away. Am petrified I’ll fail again, mainly because I can’t figure out what I did wrong. Got another test booked for tomorrow lunchtime.
Section 1, I scored 14/15 the first time, and 15/15 the second.
Section 2 is what stuffs me up. The guy at the RTA let me see my individual scores. Probably wasn’t supposed to, but felt sorry for me I think.
It’s labelled a “Hospital” in the test. I don’t remember seeing a hospital. But it’s the slow down ones.
You’re following a red car through a small neighbourhood, and someone opens their car door just as you pass them. Should you slow down? In reality you couldn’t because it’s a last minute thing. Doesn’t make any sense.
I slowed as the red car tried to slow and turn right. Slowed when a car from the left tried to turn into my lane. The rest I forget. But I got two like this, and according to my report, I got both wrong.
It was definitely the red car one, but I just don’t know or remember what I did wrong.
The tunnel: Ok, remember this one. I gather from other posts that you’re supposed to slow when you see the indicator lights come on of the truck in the left lane? I don’t remember this. Just remember the car slowing down, which wouldn’t affect me since I’m in the opposite lane. I’m guessing there wss a truck ahead of the car which is trying to get into my lane? I find the video such poor quality, that I probably didn’t notice it in the bckground.
Think I’ll watch the background more clearly this time.
Thanks in advance if anyone can help
Goddamn it!!! I can’t even pass the VicRoads test.
Practice run is simple. Cyclist one is easy, you don’t overtake.
But the slow down ones get me again. On the pedestrian one, I’ve tried clicking as soon as I see the crossing, and then as the amber light flashes. I fail every time.
On the country lane with the loose gravel one, when are you supposed to click? I clicked as I see the sign clearly. Fail every time.
I’m doing what I would normally do in a car. What else can I do. And I keep failing this DQT for the exact same reasons.
Any advice anyone?
Cheers
James
Ok, got the VicRoads one.
You slow down at the last minute almost as the first pedestrian disappears behind the car. Though, if it were me in real life, I would have slowed way before.
The gravel one, you slow just as the yellow sign becomes fully visibile just before you become level with it.
Community, don’t ya just love it!! Thanks to the kindness all those people who have written on here, I WANT to do the same. What goes around comes around.
So you’ve seen my rant above about failing twice, well I passed today on third attempt. Woohoo!! Seems like you either got it, or you have to work at it. But stay focussed, and you’ll pass.
Part 1 – Multiple Choice Knowledge Test:
I really can’t help here since it was all a blur. Got all questions right each time as a result of reading over the entire DQT handbook thoroughly. Probably spent 4hrs reading it, and taking notes. Then re-reading my notes. And practice all the online practice questions. Soon enough the stats etc will sink in, and you’ll know it intuitively. If you’re smart, a qucik skim read and a good memory might get you through.
Part 2 – Hazard Perception:
How did I go from failing on the same things each time to aceing the test? A bit of hard nosed determinism helps a lot.
Learn from your mistakes! I realised that a) the main problem was the slow down questions, b) I kept making the same mistakes so it’s just the way I’m approaching it.
Make sure you get the test report, ask the clerk any questions you might have, and don’t leave until you get the answers (within reason). E.g. getting them to explain to their best ability the results. There are only three question types: A) Turn right, B) Overtaking, and C) Slowing down.
A) Turn rights are easy in my opinion. The general consensus on this forum is that you wait until you are certain there is space to turn. Can an elephant fit through.
B) Overtaking. There is unlikely any examples other than the cyclists or something similar. General consensus is, don’t overtake. Do nothing. Worked for me.
C) Slowing down. If you can’t do this well like me, read through this forum. These questions are slightly more ambiguous for sure. It is a crap test. I don’t react the same, and am not as alert watching a poor quality video as I am in a car. But that’s how it is. Stop bitching & start doing. Hence I have some tips below to help you.
C1) Scan. This is the best advice the RTA gives. When you watch the video, look everywhere for everything. Constantly scan. Check the foreground and the background. Traffic lights changing, old people, people pushing prams, cars pulling into your lane, car lights braking (note, they are difficult to see in daylight. Look closely in the video.) People opening doors, people walking to their cars. These are all worthy hazards, which I think you touch the screen for. This is why I believe I failed. Because I saw things too late, or hesitated.
C2) Touch screen as soon as a an item becomes a potential hazard. Let’s be specific here. 100m ahead, you see a car pulling up from a side street, possibly running out infront of you. As soon as you see it, it’s a potential hazard. However, a roadsign not yet clearly visibile is not yet indicating a hazard until you can see it. So don’t click until you can read the sign! A car braking infront of you is instantly a potential hazard. Touch screen. The guy who opens his door, or suddenly walks to the car. Touch screen.
Again, I believe I failed because I hesitated to touch the screen when I saw a car pulling in from the side road until I was much closer. I was checking to see if the car would infact pull infront of me. It was a potential hazard as soon as I saw it.
C3) Have your finger on the trigger. This is more important than you might think. The scoring is partly based on how quickly you react. It makes perfect sense if you think about it. So have the finger poised to strike, not sitting on your lap.
C4) This one helped me a lot. I was sitting too close to the screen an focused on what was in the foreground only. Sit back. Get comfortable. Make sure you have a comfortable view of the whole screen. Make sure your headphones are working. Makre sure the screen is clear, and not blocked/shaded. Make sure the pc doesn’t freeze, and that it’s registering your touches. If not, tell someone. This is your responsibility. The test is shit, but the RTA advisers are not out to destroy you. Treat them with respect and get what you deserve.
C5) This is the most important. Of all the scanning techniques I mentioned above. Practice the bloody thing in real life. On the way to the test, or any trip beforehand in the car as a passenger, sit up front, and practice scanning. Look for every opportunity you would brake.
I read comments here about how many right turns, and slow downs people had. I swopped computers this time, and yet still I got the very same HP questions on ALL three attempts. In some ways this was worse, because I feared failing the very same way again.
But son of a gun, I got 7, yes count them. 7 slow downs. The most ambiguous hated questions. It felt like it would never end. But if I passed, you surely can too.
To me, the above pointers are of much more use than that below, but here is the rough breakdown
Turn Right 1: Truck topped on opposite site of intersection. Wait right until the car has gone AFTER the motorbike before turning if you get the chance.
Turn Right 2: Turning into a side street. Even though you migth go immediately, I waited until it was very clear.
Overtaking 1: Never overtake the cyclists. The golden rule.
Slow down 1: 80km/h tunnel. Brake once when the car to the left brakes, then again as the car infront of him indicates to come into your lane and he brakes again
Slow down 2: Following the truck on the freeway. I waited until the semi to my right stopped accelerating. You don’t know if it’ll keep on going passed you, so wait until he matches speed of truvk infront of you, then touch screen
Slow down 3: Suburban street. Starts off with a parked truck on left hand side. I never slowed, but might be an idea to since there’s only one other opportunity to slow after this. After the truck a car approaches from the side street. Slow down.
Slow down 4: I can’t remember if this was part of aanother video, but it’s a country road with a truck with flashing lights parked on lefthand side of road. I didn’t touch immediately. Only as I got close enough that it might be a hazard. How long is a piece of string.
Slow down 5 & 6: This was the worst one. Going through a relatively busy neighbourhood behind a red car. Lots of hazards. I clicked all as I saw them immediatley. The car brakes infront of you, the guy goes to his car, a guy opens the door of his car
Slow down 7 & 8: These were slow downs, but I forget which ones.
Get through this, and you’ll get through anything.
The subtle irony of all this is, on the photo of my full license I look so much happier than the photo on my provisional!!
between the car infront, and what’s
OMG… MY TEST IS 2MORRO AT 9:30AM….
Thanks to this wonderful website… Just reading it has given me so much confidence and encouragement. Basically, what I get from the above comments is that “you have to read the book.” I hope and pray that I do pass 2morro coz
1. I need to drive and without my licence, it feels like having no legs.
2. I paid $37 for the test.. Dont want to pay that again LOL
Efff well see you all 2morro and hopefully… I do PASS…
THANKS EVERYONE….
HELLO MY DEAR FRIENDS…I PASSED…I Passed all my test first go and now my full licence also on the first go WOW…
FIRSTLY THANK YOU GOD FOR SUPPORTING ME IN THE TEST…
Thank God for Michael who created this site. God will repay you Michael in some way, some day for your kindness…
THANKS to everyone that made comments in this site. Your support and encouraging words has helped me pass today.
I would like to help others by saying:
READ THE BOOK OR U WILL REGRET IT…
Practice the online examples coz they help sooo much…
The best material I used from the comments above is from ‘Mike Crick’.
Basically it can be anything and everything….
Part 1
Learn ur Statistics well… There was so many questions on the basics.
- Consequences of Road Crashes. I had a question about country areas crashes and their percentages…
- Risk Taking – Drive aggressively question
- There was a Head Check question
- Three Second Rule
- The ‘Space Cushion’
Thatz mostly the ones I remember, however some are soo easy that you will get it coz other options do not match the question…LOL
But please do not make the mistake I made.. Study the Alcohol, drugs and Fatigue well coz I got that one wrong.
Part 2
OMG u never if u going good or not coz u think you should and then your not meant to.. Besides in real life we never do.
Take extra care. Same as the comments above, slow down when u need to. I got 2 bikes ones, didnt even touch them. Some right turns but did not go coz it was raining.
ONLY GO WHEN U NEED 2… OK
ANYWAYS… SEE YA… GOOD LUCK EVERYONE…
Ive been looking over your website over and over . i downloaded tthe dqt book and have practiced knowlege questions on rta website my problem isnt with the section 2 but section one ! Im totally freaking out . im one who hates to fail!
My test is this friday i really hope i pass ! off to study again Hopefully il have some good news on friday . Thanks for putting up this website its very informative .
just wondering how long did u all study b4 taking the test?
Hi Michael…
Thank’s alot for putting up this website and thanks to all the people who wrote all the tips and tricks ‘how to pass DQT test. Yesterday, I passed my test..a few days bfor my P2 licence expired. Thank God u can’t imagined how i feel..so relieved! (cos i was a bit rushed thinking that my licence’ll be expired soon!)
A FEW POINT that all people say here and i’ll like to mention it again…cos i think it’s
very helpfull are:
1.Thinking about something that will motivate you to pass this test,I thought about the dress that i want..;P I was thinking like ..hey! I don’t wanna waste my money 40 $ again and again to get the licence! If i failed 3-4 times, i could buy a nice dress with this sort of money!! This really motivated me to pass the test!
2. Be Calm, don’t get panicked, after finished one questions (in part 2), and bfor starting the next video clip, take a breath, it helped me to feel ‘a bit’ relax, relieved abit tension.
3.Be a SUPER SAFE driver, turn right only when there’s hugeeeeeeeeeeeee gap between ur car ana an oncoming vehicle, or there’s no vehicle coming at all. Most of the time i didn’t touch screen at all.(especially when u’re asked to turn right in the heavy rains).
4.Be a SUPER Patient driver, NEVER EVER overtake the cyclist.
5.Touch the screen as qucik as possible (ONCE) when u see each hazards.
I’m doing my first go at DQT in about three hours and am so nervous…read the book and looked at all the questions everyone posted. More nervous about the questions that the hazard perception atm!
I passed! The HP was fine for me, I am normally a very very cautious driver.
As for questions, I had all ones I’d seen on here before except for:
How long does it take to brake after spotting a hazard? (I knew the answer was 1.5 seconds for this one)
What are the most common collisions with cars involving motorbikes? (I don’t know this one so I guessed cars pulling out in front of motorbikes)
Just passed the test first go.
Read the book once or twice and read the key points from the book 5 or 6 times and you’ll be fine for the theory. The correct answer jumped out for me every time.
For part 2 just be really cautious – Don’t overtake cyclists, and if you get the scenarios where it says press the screen when you would slow down, be very cautious. The test is not hard so don’t get too worked up.
Thanks for your comments everyone they helped me get through the test with ease.
Just wanted to let everyone know i passed 1st go on friday . the test isnt as scary as everyone makes out! Seriously!!!!
And thanks to this site I have my new 5 year gold licence ! Thanks a heap!
Advice : to pass this test u need to study the book without a doubt
But i still can understand what the statistics have to do with being a better driver !
revenue raising forsure
It should read ” i cant understand what the statistics have to do with making you a better driver !”
I just want to say thank u Michael and everybody who leave so many wonderful comments in this site. I am going to do the test tomorrow. I failed two months ago and never tried since then. I hope I can pass this time with all the skills learnt from here.
Thank you soooooooooooooooo much Michael. You were so kind to create such a wonderful site for us. I finish my DQT today and pass it with no mistake in part1&2. Last time, I made 1 in part1 and 3 in part 2. something to contribute TODAY .
in part 1,
I ‘ve been asked what is the good habit of scanning routine.
If there is an accident happened, what does a driver possible to do. Of cause trying to blame others.
I remember there was a stupid question about driving distance with the car parking on the road side. There were 4 options, 75m, 45m, 1m and 0.75m Of cause the answer is 1m.
There weren’t many statistics in my test, a lot of common sence questions.
In part 2
I have been asked to slow down for many times. I remember one senario was in a two way road. There were suicidal lady, a man tried to open his door, a girl returned to her car… I might not do it very well. However, the same senario appeared again in the next question. Then I managed to do it better. I don’t know if it is normal or not.
Anyway, THANK YOU FOR ALL OF YOU WHO LEAVED SO MANY GREAT COMMENTS HERE.
MAY GOD BLESS ALL OF YOU. OF CAUSE INCLUDING ME.
Good info… i went today and failed twice within one hour.. guess i was trying to be a hero and not study the book.. going again tomorrow this time im going to memorize the book lol
Hey guys thanks heaps for all the advice and tips. I went for my test today and was pretty nervous and shaky but as a result of reading other peoples experiences i was more than prepared and the test actually was alot easier than Id worked it up to be.
Quick bits – For Part 1 – I received quite a few questions based on statistics or percentages. eg. How more likely are you to crash going 70km rather than 60km. (answer is twice as likely)
and one that appeared that im still unsure whether i got right or wrong was ‘When do most speeding related crashes occur’ I ticked daytime, but night time was another option. I think I got it. Anyway part 1 is a breeze if you read through the booklet and additionally use the resources on this website. (Well done Michael!)
Part 2 – I got one ovetaking question, as tempting as it is do NOT ovetake the cyclists. I had 4 turn right questions and i only turned right on one of them I think.
The slow down questions gave me some uncertainty just as to how the computer judges whether your stop is early or late. Press the screen when a sign is clear but dont leave it too late, and I pressed again when entering the corners after the sign (not sure if i needed to but play it safe)
Try not to stress over it, (I tried not to but was still shaky) By the end of the test I was very confident I had passed. Just remember as long as you spot the hazards and react before they are a danger you’ll be fine.
I never got any feedback from the RTA other than ‘yep you passed’.
Now who wants to come out and celebrate with me by drinking light beers so I can legally drive home!!!!
Wohoooo pass on first try. Thanks for this site I owe everything in here. Anyway whats the answer for this question: ” When your driving at 60 km/h ..what percentage u most likely hit or kill someone?.
A 10%
B 70%(this is where 50/50 not sure if this is the right answer).
C 90% (this is what i answer please correct me if i am wrong).
d 1%
i know it’s a bit late. but thanks mate. i knew those test were a bit bullcrap.
and i am one of those poeple not good with statistics and numbers. farout rta sure knows how to milk people like me for our money.
thanks again for the tips. hope i pass it today.
When your driving at 60 km/h ..what percentage u most likely hit or kill someone?.
correct answer is 70% (page 67 of handbook)
most if not all the question of part 1
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=CC5QMWIW
scan it if u scare of virus.
becareful some of the answer is wrong example question 32 its suppose 2 be (c) Collides with the rear end of another vehicle.
Hey guys and gals,
I just wanted to say that I went for test to get my full’s licence today and……………………I GOT IT FIRST GO!!!!! Whoo hoo.
I have to admit that this website has help me so much. And I can not thank you enough.
All I can say is read the DQT handbook and take notes of the important information.
When it comes to the day of test, don’t be nervous and take your time in reading the questions in part 1 and in part 2 if you feel that it is right don’t touch the screen.
Thanks heaps and good luck to you all
I have been lurking this page for the past 2 days reading everyones comments/etc.
I had my p’s booked for Friday, but read the book once on Wednesday and decided to give it a crack on Thursday (today). Wasn’t too confident, but just had a clear head and thought “what do the RTA want you to say/do”… Passed 1st go.
Just wanted to thank everyone for their submissions (especially the text files.. the guy who summarised the book to a 10 page word doc is a legend).
the questions and so-fourth. Thanks guys.
THANK EVERY ONE FOR ALL THE INFO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I HAVE HEAPS OF DIFFICULTIES IN PASSING THE TEST, I’VE TRIED 6 TIMES AND THEN I GOT UPSET AND WANTING TO QUIT. BUT THEN I FOUND THIS SITE AND ITS ACTUALLY HELPING ME ALOT. P.S. I HOPE I PASS THE TEST THIS WEEK…
thank you … alll… for the info…. i have trouble passing the DQT test, i tried 6 time and still fail … i dont know y…. i read and make notes from the book but it didnt help much…. i was going to give up .. lucky i find this site… im studying really hard so that i can pass…
thank u…. ‘TTN’….. ur questions help alost!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i went like 7 times and failed ive been on my greens for 4years help
Hi guys! I was at Green P for 9 yrs and it took me a day to understand why I passed the DQT test.
After long hours driving, many times got little accident and a crash that ultimately teach you how to be better driving, you would understand and knows how to answer DQT questions. Its all about checking your hazard while you are driving! In the real one!
Well this is my story, I went into advance driving training course that run by one of the most prestige car make in the world. Mercedes Benz! They thought you the hard way how to handle the road and understand that we want the licence not only better handling on the road but also better understand with the perception!
They took me to the Eastern Creek racing field a few years ago and guess what! That the thrill you would not miss! With AMG V8 most powerfull engine and with my Green P plate. You think you know everything? Bet you dont! Dont think as well that after 1 or 2, 3 years your driving experience you become the most toughtest driver out there. Well I tell you what. It never will! This car really spin me around! Not only on the track but also on the skid water road! Think for a moment that you are on the real road situation! What would you do? Slow down! Going fast to follow your adrenalin? How about drinking? Or play it safe? Hm that’s what I called the mind set to teach you how to react. By this experience, you than understand when you are going to the public road! And can answer to those all DQT questions and be proud you are not just having licence for a sake of having it but knows how to handle the road rules and the vehicle of yours!
Now I hope everyone who reading this will get I have explained. Teach yourself first long enough on the road, get expert or advance driving course to teach what is about driving and hazard perceptions and review all those quoestions you ever had from you are started as learner until you are having green P.
I bet everyone will pass at once just with sensible mind on the road!
Hey everyone, i just wanted to thank the person that created this page it helped me so much!
I went for my test on Friday and passed the first time!!!!
These were the questions i got in section 1
1) At what speed do most accidents occur
a) 60km/h
b) 70km/h
c) 80km/h
d) 100km/h
The answer for this was A
2) what does the term sleep debt refer to: (this was easy to pick out)
answer:
Sleep debt is the difference
between the hours of sleep you need and the
hours of sleep you actually get.
3) another question was who is more likey to be overcofident in driving? (also very easy)
answer was male drivers
4) for this one i got a cartoon animation showing a top-aerial view of a red car following a blue on a two way road in daylight. the question was how many seconds gap is between the blue and red car:
a) 2 seconds
b) 3 seconds
c) 4 seconds
d) 6 seconds
answer was b) 3 seconds (again very easy)
5) another question was a young male driver has a higher crash risk when driving with:
a) passengers of the same age
b) driving alone
c) driving with an older female
d) or girlfriend
answer was a) passengers of the same age
6) most crashes in nsw likely to occur between Mon-Fri between what times? (something like that)
a) 3pm- 9pm
b) 3pm – 6pm
c) 9am – 3pm
d) 3am – 9am
answer was c)9am -3pm
7) what factor accounts for most crashes (or something like that)
a) bad weather
b) human error
c) environmental factors
d) bad roads
answer was b) human error
a) look at the inside and outside mirrors
b) headcheck to the left
c) headcheck to the right
d) or headcheck to left and right
i remember answering d for this
That’s all i can remember. hope this helps!
section II
this is the section i was freaked out by
Slow down ones: touch the screen almost everytime LOL, like when u see a yellow sign, people about to cross, cars coming from the opposite direction, parked cars etc.
right turn: there’s no need to touch the screen if you think it is not safe to turn right.
i had heaps of these and i only remember touching the screen twice
hope this helps!
remeber to bring a lot of money with you because its a big rip-off. i paid close to $190: $151 for a 5 yr license and $36 for the test
good luck everyone and remember do not stress over this test because its actually easier than you think.
another important thing to remember is to take your time to read all the instructions carefully because you have a lot of time!!
Hi to all
i have just passed DQT test….these comments are very helpful…….I m very thankful to you guys..
For passing the test just read book carefully………and take your time in between the questions.
If you read all these comments i think you would pass easily…….All the best
Hi Guys
I sat for my test today…i have always hated these tests:(
I failed all my other tests on the computer and paseed the practical test first go
Unfortunatley i didn’t pass today:(
But i did have a question
Has anyone had this question
who is the most emotional drivers
males
young women
women over 50
and another male one i think
i chose young women
I think i got that one wrong
Could someone tell me the answer
Thank you
Ps i just found this sight today i should have found it earlier, as i could have passed today if i had found it earlier.
“Young male drivers are more likely than women to let their emotions dictate how they drive” page 31 of the handbook.
I tried attempted twice and failed both
like many others, I got all correct in part 1
and failed to “slowing down and avoid hazard or crashes” in part 2
“I had a question where your driving along a two way road and theres an oncoming truck and a motorbikle that atempts to overtake the turck”
I had this exact question and I ONLY touched the screen when i saw the truck coming. but DIDN’T touch it again when the motorbike pulled out. Coz I thought it’d be too late.
I’m still confused, should I touch it once or should I touch it both in the begining of the clip and then touch it again when i see that motorbike coming out?
I passed, and I had that truck/motorbike question. I pressed the screen twice, once when the truck was coming and again when the motorbike pulled out. I don’t know how I did in that question specifically, but as I said I passed the whole thing so it couldn’t have been wrong.
Going for my DQT test today, I am absolutely freaking out after seeing so many people fail their first go. I barely found the time to study, but I have the handbook on me and read through the whole thing last night and I’m going over and over the summaries for each section every chance I get. I think I am more freaked out about the touch screen part rather than the questions! People seem to think that they are doing the right thing, but they end up failing !! I’m glad that there are websites like this just to go over in case you find any hard questions that you wouldn’t expect to find in the test. I passed L’s and P2 test first go, so hopefully I will pass this time around, fingers crossed!
Okay so I just failed! My report said it was Because I didn’t select safe gaps when turning and didn’t slow down to avoid crashes. But I felt as though it was because I touched the screen TOO many times. Michael you are right about it being a psychological game, it’s terrible and you can barely see the screen! I’m so depressed about the fact that I got all the questions right! What a waste!!!
Thanks Amy, I’ll do that
Just wondering how many time when our answers are incorrect will lead to a fail?
can u tell more about the test please i want today and i fail it was too heard
I just passed first attempt and I had to wing half the questions because I barely studied…just got lucky I guess :S I really thought I had failed though because I often didn’t opt to turn right when the gaps were rather large. However, I chose not to touch the screen because I wasn’t able to determine speed from the image and often by the time I realised they were going slow enough and probably had time to go, it’s kinda too late to touch the screen. Seems to have been OK though. There was another where I thought I should have turned right (got about 5 or 6 of those) but the crap mobile phone video quality made the blinker of the approaching car (wanting to turn right at the intersection) completely impossible to see. Perhaps they take these things into account… Plus I opted to go when I couldn’t see behind cars on the opposite side turning left and there were actually cars approaching. In real life, I’d have crashed. It’s likely my passing was purely a fluke.
For the theory bit, cram about the statistics a little more. Accidents – who/what/when and consequences.
Thanks to everyone here who have previously posted..your tips were a great help to me
I think the dqt second part is deliberately designed to eliminate cautious drivers. slowing down to many times is accepted as a wrong answer, and I cannot still believe that. In one of the videos I was shown, the break lights of the car in front of me was on, there was a worker standing by a vehicle inside the road, A car reversing towards the road from a driveway, a car tring to turn to the road I was driving on, a driver opening the door of his car. that is five hazards and I touched the screen 5 times. I failed and I saw that this answer was accepted as wrong since I touched the screen too many times. I think RTA should make it clear what it wants exactly from the people taking this test.
just had my dqt on the 22nd dec and passed – thanks everyone for their input and comments about the test, they really helped!
here are some pointers regarding the video test:
- try to relax before the exam, take deep breaths
- pretend as if you’re driving a car in real life, slow down in the video as you would in a real life situation, etc.
- keep your hands poised ready to tap the screen, but keep your fist clenched when you know you should not make a selection, so you don’t accidently tap the screen
here are some pointers regarding actual videos:
- NEVER choose to overtake the cyclists!!
- when a car/truck approaches you in the opposite direction lane, don’t tap to slow down, this will be seen as overly cautious
- tap to slow down when you see a warning sign on the road, and tap to slow down again if you actually encounter the hazard (e.g. one of the videos involved a road sign warning about debris on the road – tap to slow down when you see the sign and tap again when you drive across the debris)
- when driving on a multilane road, and a truck moves alongside you, you don’t need to tap. only tap to slow down when the vehicle in front is applying their brakes or signalling to turn.
- when turning right in safe gaps, make sure all oncoming cars have created a reasonable gap; if you feel that the next oncoming car will reach the intersection within 2 seconds or less, DO NOT tap to turn
i’ve actually compiled a summary of the main points of the dqt handbook, and some notes on the video test (which i gathered from all the comments posted here). you can access them here:
dqt video test notes: http://www.mediafire.com/file/znxnuyhvyjh/DQT Part II Tips.pdf
dqt handbook notes: http://www.mediafire.com/file/x0wlzmzkmt2/DQT Theory Summary.pdf
good luck everyone!
Thanks alot to this website. It was really helpfull, i got mu full licence today. thank you again : Nitin
Just want to say thanks Michael for setting up this website and for all the comments made by everyone. It helped me so much…I passed my DQT this morning. Yeah!
I can’t remember the questions I got for part 1…but they were pretty much common sense and most were straight from the DQT handbook and those few that weren’t were very straightforward and based on common sense. I recommend reading the whole DQT handbook once, then going over the Key Summaries at the end of each major topic a few times and have have a look over certain pictures (in the DQT book) like how the car in front of you should look if your 3 seconds away. Doing this should help u pass part 1.
For the 2nd bit I got an fairly even amount of questions on ‘when would I slow down’ and ‘when would I turn right’ and one overtaking scenario. My advice would be to just do this part as if u were actually driving. Also type Driver Qualification Test in youtube and on the 2nd page or so there are examples of some driving scenarios. I think thr test is for British citizens…but I found it useful.
When doing the test take a break for a few seconds and take ur time.
Good luck to all and try to remain calm!!! (Never give up and keep trying even if u don’t get it 1st go)
going for my dqt test today for the second time but i don’t think i am going to do well even though i read the book all night last night, i ll just take my time and see how i will go…………….wish me luck
failed again what m i doing wrong lol………..does anyone know what the percentage is u need to get to pass this test, i am going to give up soon as i am not doing to well, i read the book and i forget most things by the time i go lol………can anyone help me out
heyaz i went for my test today and i passed no problems, i went for it before and i failed then i found this site which helped me out heapz, and to suzie i recomend writing down every statistic you find in the book and revising them aswel as readin the summary part and with the 2nd part of the exam the hpt i got scenes such as when to turn right and i never did and scenes where i press the screen everytime i need to stop so i jst stopped straight away den stopped when i saw another car and stopped when the car infronts brake lights went on.
hope this helps abit, thnx agen
i have read the book like 4 times i have trouble remembering things, i read and forget lol…………so im just going to give up i think…………
Went to RTA and did my DQT today, with the help of this website and http://michael.langley.id.au/blog/posts/44 , I passed. Thank you.
My tips for the test.
Part 1 : 15 questions, if you think u have 3 questions wrong or less. Don’t worry so much about it. I think that RTA would forgive you for that. (it helps if you go through the handbook thoroughly, or just the key points, if you don’t have the time)
Part 2 : 10 questions (i think), THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF THE TEST, you will need to get them all right,
basically (i think) that there are 3 categories to this question:
1. Is it safe to make a right turn? – basically there is a fine weather, rain, also dark (or night time)
My tips for this category depends on the situation. As you have read the tips from the top of the page. “DO NOT TURN unless there’s a wide enough gap for an elephant to wander across”, also look at the traffic lights, i got a video where the traffic lights were red, so i sat there didn’t touch the screen, just checking out the girl next to me, she was pretty flyy, gigidy …. alllrighttt.
2. Is it safe to slow down? – slow down when there is a hazard, e.g. mum pushing a tram, a car coming out of nowhere, etc
3. Is it safe to take over? – You will notice that in this category of the question, there will most probably be 2 cyclists in front of you. there is no need to overtake them, in plain words do not overtake.
I think thats about it, just like someone said. “Think of it this way, just pretend that you bought a BRAND new car:P, be very careful and mindful of your surroundings.”
GOOD LUCK, hope it helps
does anyone know how many can u get wrong…………………
Passed 1st go just the other day.
Just dropped by to say thanks to all the people who commented and the creator of the site (3 years and still going strong!). Nothing extra to add because ‘ its all here “. Really! Every single question that showed up on my screen was mentioned in the comments above (both part 1 and 2). LOL!!!
So DON’t Be Nerrvous because you’re practically looking at the ans.. … *wink wink*
*GOOD LUCK* future DQT’ers
i want full driver practice test
PASSED THANKS TO DIS SITE … QUESTION R BIT TRICKY SO READ THE BOOK … IF U DONT HAVE TIME STIL HAVE A QUICK READ D/L THE HANDBOOK FROM RTA SITE AND JUS GO THRU IT QUICKLY .. 2ND PART OF THE TEST SEEM HEAPS EASIER DEN THE 1ST PART.. 2ND PART TOUCH THE SCREEN ONCE … IT SAY TOO TOUCH IT MORE DEN ONCE BUT DONT IT DOESN’T GIVE U A BATTER FEED BACK… IF U FAILING DONT GIVE UP TAKE UR TIME AND READ THE BOOK .. BOOK SEEMS LAME TO PPLZ BUT ITS THE WAY TO GO… AT LEAST WEN I GET PULL OVER I CAN SMILE CAN SAY I HAD TWO DRINKS LOL
wat a load of frog sh– thanks mate good help i hope wish me luck just bout to go for them failed yesterday
Just passed the DQT.. feel like I am at the top of the world!!! It was my second attempt and thanks to this site, I could anticipate the questions!
I think I was overconfident in my first attempt, have an international licence and got my P2 directly. I never had to give DKT. I didnt expect the HP to be that hazardous!
Part one questions were almost the same, except for one tricky on –
There was an animation of two cars running on a country road with trees by its side, and the question was what is the following distance? For this question I counted the time (1001-1002-1003) it takes after the first car crossed a particular tree and the second car to reach the same.
In the Part two scenes
There was one with a right turn at an intersection where the signal was green. There was a truck on the opposite side that too was waiting for a right turn, I never touched the screen because I was waiting for the truck to takes its turn first as it blocked view of all the oncoming traffic from the other side. This one is similar to the once on vicroads only the motorbike is not there.
the rest of the scenes have already been mentioned,
)
Overtake cyclists (Never did, even though there was enough gap and the cyclists seemed to have given way),
right turn in rain (never did),
right turn in night on a highway (got a gap and so touched the screen),
slow down one on a country road where a bike tries to overtake a truck from the opposite direction(touched the screen as soon as i saw the bike coming out),
Slow down one in tunnel where a bus tries to come in the lane (touched the screen as soon as i saw the indicator from the bus),
right turn – this was same as the practice test,
right turn on a highway in daylight (didnt touch the screen at all, the space was not enuf for an elephant to pass
A big thanks to all those who have posted before, this site really helped a lot.
Wow can’t believe this blog started 3 years ago but still a great place to come for DQT help!
Look I’ve read alot of comments and got alot of help before I went for my test today from all you guys and I appreciate it. I passed first go and just want to tell anyone nervous not to be. Only a few statistic questions come in to play with majority of them being common sence questions.
Section 1 should not be a problem for anyone (Keep in mind your allowed 4 mistakes from 15 questions) neither should section 2.
For those who are going for there DQT Please follow this simple rule for section 2 and that is do not hit the screen more then 3 times in each section. The lady at the counter told me after the test that majority of people hit the screen to many times resulting in a fail. In very rare cases I hit the screen more then twice especially when right turns. Only hit the screen once when theres a massive gap. And as for following the cyclists do not hit the screen, way to many blind spots even though there were no cars. You might get a wet weather one when turning right again do not hit the screen not enough safe gaps.
When you get questions when you have to touch the screen to slow down only touch it when there are yellow signs for corners I never hit the screen to slow down when there was a car on the other side of the road going the other way might be considered to hestitant.
Be careful though you might get one where a motorbike is behind this truck coming the other way but you cant see the bike until he swerves into your lane hit the screen to slow down before the bike rider realises that your there and heads back behind the truck.
No need to study the whole book unless you want to know the in and outs of road statistics only have a brief overview at key points and you should be right. To be honest the only study I did was through this blog didnt look at the handbook and glad I didnt the answers are all here so thanks everyone.
I wish everyone the best of Luck in joining the unrestricted Club. (P platers are no longer professionals to me anymore there poofters and should be banned from the roads lol)
I also can’t believe this blog was created 3 years ago! Thank you Michael and to everyone’s comments, it was very helpful! It’s great to see everyone helping each other out and working as a ‘community’! I just did the DQT test and passed.
For Part 1 had no statistic related questions but having said that, it’s a good idea to know them just in case it comes in yours!
The questions I remember for Part 1 were:
- The times when most people get fatigue Ans: 4am-8am
- The medical label and what it means
- Why police book for speeding? Ans: Crashes are caused by speeding.
Part 2: It’s similar to what people stated in the above posts! But, there was a scenario where I was driving in the night and I had to turn right – I couldn’t exactly see the cars properly but I pressed twice when I thought there was no movement happening!
Don’t stress and the film clips are much shorter and a bit easier than you might think!
Best to the future DQTers!
chooo hoo i passed first go, thanks to mike and everyone on this website God bless, im so over the sky! and relieved that its over.
I followed everyones pointers, really study the DQT book along with all the main pointers in this site, i promise you you’ll be fine. thankyou again to everyone on this page i wish you all the best. God Bless
Hey everyone im going for my test tomoro, ill try to take with me a spy camera and upload the videos to youtube so everyone can feel comfortable.. I will be wearing a shirt and under the shirt I will be hiding my spy pen with camera recording all the questions and videos.. I believe that I will pass first go therefore no need to study, all general knowledge..Thank you verymuch people
Hello everyone its me , I was only joking about the camera but I passed the test.
First part was very very easy, I had no statistical questions at all, Questions I had were very general, it was basically general knowledge based questions.
Part2 was alright I had the following:
2 over take videos – Basicall in both videos there are 2 cyclists in front of you, it ask you to touch the screen to overtake one is in suburban busy street and the other is at country road. In bot cases you DO NOT touch the screen at all.
2 slow down videos – One I cant really remeber but I touched the screen 3 times. The other video is while the car is going u see the break lights of the car in font of you go on so I touch the screen and while you do that if you look ahead you can spot a bus on the left side when you get close to it the bus signals and goes in front of you so I touched the screen as soon as I realised the bus wants to move in.
6 right turn videos – 2 of these were the same as the screenshot at the top ofthis page which were very easy basically common sense (if u get this wrong u definately dont deserve a licence). 1 of the videos were toturn right while raining, it was heavy rain, to me it looked like there was a safe gap at one point but I never touched the screen.
One of the videos was to turn right but the road was kinda curved and it was night time u can see the cars through the trees and u have to estimate if its safe gap.. There was a safe gap somewhere midlle of the video but I made some doubts and it was late to touch however I was lucky there was one more safe gap towards the end of the video so I touched it when I saw the last gap.
And there was also a video to turn right at traffic lights I didnt touch that as well.
At the end I passed and as a feedback I had somethig about one of the slowing down videos which I could have done better,(I guess it was the video where I touched 3 times in quick successions)
Overall it was easy Just hope that you dont get slow down questions because the videos are poor quality and its hard to notice and judge the hazards so I found right turns pretty easy.
GOOD LUCK evrybody
Took the test second time and passed by the Grace of God and thanks to this site and Michael’s site
Part 1- was mostly the general knowledge questions in the book. I got the driving behind the red truck question as a practice question. The correct answer is 3 seconds. The one that stumped me was, scanning question. Is it looking ahead as well as looking to the sides?? The other question was about detecting hazards. I chose scanning and listening in order to detect hazards..Not sure..
Part 2- I was really dreading this my hand was shaking but I took my time and said a prayer after each question. I got a lot of slow down ones.
There is one where there is a truck/trailer on the side of the road. Slow down as soon as you see it because there is a intersection soon after you pass it.
I got the red car twice, it will hit the brakes to turn in both cases slow down both times, there is a guy that comes out of a car, two people standing by the side of the road and an intersection, beginning of a school zone. I honestly dont remember the difference between the two red car questions they were all pretty similar to me.
There was a tunnel question. There was a bit of a bend in the tunnel and soon after that merging traffic to your right. It was a very short clip and I think I might have touched the screen soon as I saw the right lane merging.
There is another question where you are on a rural road/narrow road following a truck. The truck will brake to turn, brake as well after a few seconds you see a red siren/alarm sign to your left. Slow down a few seconds after, I touched the screeen as soon as I saw the alarm then i got paranoid as I was nearing the car.
There was a turn right question where I had two chances to turn right. I also got the one where there is tonnes of traffic and one of the cars which was turning right changes its mind and continues straight through.
I was able to pass through lots of prayer, this site and michael’s site and I also practised scanning for hazard by using the practice questions on especially the scanning for hazards section, on this part of the RTA site. http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/licensing/tests/driverqualificationtest/hazardperceptionpart2/buildyourhazardperceptionskills.html
I went for the DQT today and passed on my first attempt. I was extremely nervous after reading many people failing the Hazard section of the test.
I read the whole Handbook about 3 times and the main points about 2-3 times until they stuck and i could literally recite each point. Maybe a little OCD but i didn’t want to take the risk on failing something where the answers are given to you.
On section 1 i actually don’t remember getting any statistic questions. E.g. the % or anything of the sort.
I got the child pedestrian one (common sense answer)
2 questions on the medication labels (answer is always to check with the doctor, again, common sense)
1 on BAC (safest is always going to be zero BAC or to not drive at all if you drink)
1 on 3 second rule
1 on a cause of a crash
1 on identifying a crash with graphs
and the others i don’t remember lol.
With the hazard test i got 2 on overtaking in which case i didn’t touch the screen like others have said.
I got 2 on slowing down. One in the school zone following the white car and the bus pulling out (i touched 3 times, 1 for entering school zone, 1 for car in front braking and 1 for bus indicating to get in front of you)
and the other was driving in a narrow street with shops (again i touched 3 times – may have been wrong but i passed :/ ).
The rest were right turn ones which are so obvious and in most cases you only touch once. I had 2 questions where it was unsafe to turn at all.
All in all i think it’s not THAT hard, the only part that will stuff you up is the hazard slowing down questions. Other than that, if you read the book ATLEAST 3 times you shouldn’t have any problems in the first section.
Be careful, as in real life being overly cautious isn’t going to hurt but when it comes to the test i think if you don’t touch at all for anything, you will still fail for not being confident enough e.g. not turning when it was clearly safe or something. But don’t touch the screen for the sake of touching it, especially for the slowing down ones. I have heard that people failed for slowing down too many times or at wrong times.
I think i’m just lucky i got 2 of the more basic slowing down questions and didn’t get the ones with crazy pedestrians left, right and centre lol.
Thanks for the people contributing to this site, it helped me prepare myself before going for the test.
Good luck all!
hey guys i got my test tomorow im nervous :/
GUDD LUCK ALL
1. SECTION 1:
I always read the whole book. However, sometimes they can have questions which really require you to remember little things. e.g
Question: Who invlove the most in alochol related crashes?
A, men
B, woman
C, men and woman
D, woman over 50
( This is NOT exactly how the question written) Anyway, the answer is A.
hi guys havnt got luck with the dqt test its my 5 th time and havnt got them any help
hey guy tried the picking the right gap to turn right tried many time on my pc keep saying did not choose the unsafe gap…getting my head turn…be going for my test soon..
i passed but a girl to my right with a mini skirt didnt help much… :/
I’ve been sitting on my P2 licence for 7 and 1/2 years, would you believe it?!? Failed when i did the DQT the first and only occasion, and thought it was such a rediculous test that i have boycotted and not done it again! Found this site just in time ’cause hope to join the cops soon and need a full licence!! Thanks a million for the tips!
Thanks to those who have posted past and present – went and got my golds today and passed 100%, the woman was even surprised as she said most get ‘could have done better’. I put it all down to following everything on these posts. cheers! and GL.
Cheers guys massive help!
Part 2 for me had a lot of when is it safe to turn, slow down and also overtake. Part 1 was a lot harder I prepared with statistics but it was more addressed indirectly, so if you know the percentage of each option it helps you know which is the answer you need. I got asked about SSS, and ‘low alcohol hours’- trick Q, read the LOW, not HIGH. Also questions on motor cyclists, male drivers and their behaviour. I also got a pic asking what was the cause for crash- think about 3 sec rule.
That’s all I can remember now. I would tell the answers but I don’t know which ones were right.
I recommend when you do the test, take the practice questions and read carefully, know your book.
Good luck to all, Thanks to the others
Just want to say THANK YOU to u all so much for posting what you have. This website is amazing. I passed today first go. There’s no need for me to type what i had because its all already posted. This website is a big big reason why i passed. Thanks guys and good luck to the rest of u that need to do the test
P.S Make sure u do the practice questions n skip the questions u r unsure of do the ones u know and go back to them later. There is no time limit so take all the time u need…
I just wanted to say that this test is damn easy if you just skim through the book and read the summaries carefully. 30 mins max study time. Most people here are scarying you!
Here’s all of the summaries in one place.
Key points summary: Crash types
• With increasing experience drivers have fewer single vehicle, run-off the road crashes but more rear-end crashes.
• Experienced drivers may travel too close behind other vehicles and travel too fast for the conditions.
Key points summary: Understanding risk
• Almost all activities in life carry some risk of death or injury.
• Driving a car is one of the riskiest things people do everyday.
• Male drivers generally have a higher risk than female drivers as males drive more and may take more risks.
• Younger, less experienced drivers carry more risk than older more experienced ones.
• Drivers can manage their risk.
Key points summary: Consequences of road crashes
• Road crashes cost the community a lot ofmoney.
• Most crash victims don’t die – only about 1 in 50 in NSW – but many live with the physical and mental consequences for the rest of their lives.
• Most costs goes to the long term care of injured people (24 per cent).
• Loss of quality of life is the next biggest cost at 21 per cent.
Key points summary: Risk Management
• Confidence is OK, but overconfidence can make you believe that you are a better driver than you really are.
• Over confidence makes you underestimate the risk of negative outcomes such as crashes or being injured or killed.
• Male drivers are more likely to rate themselves as better than others – this may encourage over confidence and crash risk.
• The risk of getting booked for a traffic offence is more than 2000 times greater than being killed in a crash.
Key points summary: Causes of crashes and acceptance of mistakes
• Many drivers involved in crashes don’t want to admit that they might have done the wrong thing.
• ‘External attribution’ is where you blame other things or other people for what happens.
• ‘Internal attribution’ is when you accept blame or the reason that things happen to yourself.
• The best situation is where you can accept the things that are down to you.
Key points summary: Motivation and driving
• Motivation varies across people and across tasks – this applies to driving too.
• Drivers who feel pressured by time or deadlines are more likely to speed and take risks to get from A to B quickly – Even people who normally drive more carefully may do things that are dangerous.
• Young male drivers are more likely than women to let their emotions dictate how they drive.
• Some people are motivated to drive fast and take deliberate risks to get a thrill or a buzz or just relieve boredom. Their crash risk is much higher than other drivers’ and they are more likely to get booked by the police.
• Driving is motivated mainly by the desire to get from A to B as quickly as possible, but no one wants to die, get hurt or get booked in the process.
• You need to recognise that motivation affects how you drive.
Key points summary: Risk taking and driving
• People vary in their willingness or need to takes risks in life and when they drive.
• Drivers with high sensation seeking scale (SSS) scores are mostly male and may be more willing to take risks when driving and be at greater crash risk.
• Risk taking may be OK in other activities but not when driving on the road.
• Risk taking on the road is irresponsible.
• All drivers make mistakes at some time, most of them unintentional.
• Aggressive driving, including retaliating to the bad driving of others, is dangerous and
• increases the chance of a crash – it may also get you into trouble with the police.
• Negligent driving causing injury or death carries a jail term of up to 18 months.
• Dangerous driving causing injury or death carries a jail term of up to 10 years.
Key points summary: Alcohol and driving
• Alcohol is a contributing factor in about 18 per cent of fatal accidents and 6 per cent of those causing injury.
• More than half the drivers killed have a BAC of 0.15 or more – three times the legal limit of 0.05 for full licence holders.
• Staying below 0.05 is hard as not everyone takes the same number of alcoholic drinks to reach this limit.
• Women and people of both sexes who don’t weigh a lot get to higher BACs faster.
• Men are more likely to drink and drive and more likely to be involved in alcohol-related crashes.
• Alcohol reduces your ability to concentrate and to look for and respond to hazards when driving.
• Alcohol slows your reflexes when you need to take action such as braking.
• Alcohol increases the risk of a crash. Even at a 0.05, crash risk is about twice what it is at zero.
• The safest BAC for driving is zero.
• About 30 per cent of fatal accidents in ‘high alcohol hours’ are alcohol-related.
• High alcohol hours are mostly weeknights (particularly Thursday and Friday nights) and weekends.
• Drivers with alcohol in their blood are not only more likely to crash, but more likely to die if severely injured in a crash.
• Staying with a zero BAC when driving gives you an edge. It is the safest BAC for driving regardless of your licence type.
Key points summary: Other drugs and driving
• Drugs other than alcohol, including legal medicines and illegal drugs, can affect your ability to drive safely.
• All medicines or legal drugs that may affect your driving are clearly labelled with warning labels.
• Many drugs and medicines interact with each other (and alcohol) in a way that might affect your ability to drive safely.
• Your doctor or pharmacist (chemist) can advise on which medicines affect your ability to drive.
• Illegal drugs carry no warnings and may affect your driving.
• Penalties for driving under the influence of drugs include heavy fines, loss of licence and even jail.
Key points summary: Fatigue and driving
• Fatigue refers to the experience of being ‘sleepy’, ‘tired’ or ‘exhausted’.
• Fatigue can severely impair your judgment when driving.
• Fatigue is involved in about 20 per cent of fatal accidents in NSW.
• Fatigue operates a bit like alcohol in the way it increases the risk of being in a crash.
• High risk times for fatigue-related crashes are early morning between 4 am and 8 am and in the afternoon between 12 noon and 2 pm.
• Most drivers involved in fatigue-related crashes are male.
• Fatigue-related crashes are more likely to occur during public and school holidays.
• The only effective way to avoid fatigue is to get plenty of sleep. Fresh air, coffee and loud music won’t work.
Key points summary: Driving distractions and crash risk
• Distractions divert attention from the driving task and increase the risk of crashing.
• At least 14 per cent of all crashes involve the driver being distracted by something.
• Distractions that happen outside the vehicle account for about 30 per cent of crash related distractions.
• Distractions that happen inside the vehicle add up to about 36 per cent of crash related distractions.
• Distractions carry the highest risk when you are trying to do something complicated.
• Reducing distractions inside the vehicle reduces your crash risk.
Key points summary: Managing risk in the driving environment
• The combined contribution of human error and environmental factors accounts for about 26 per cent of crashes.
• Adverse conditions like bad roads and bad weather rarely cause crashes on their own – about 3 per cent of all crashes.
• Speeding, drink driving and aggressive/risky driving behaviour are more common at night.
• Controlling your speed and the space around your vehicle are the main things that you can do to manage risk.
• Driving with your headlights on low beam in daytime makes your vehicle easier to see and reduces your crash risk.
Key points summary: Expectancies and the unexpected
• Drivers often rely on expectancies when they drive.
• Other drivers will make mistakes and do things that you don’t expect.
• To cope with the unexpected, use a scanning routine and keep a safe distance from other road users.
• Give yourself plenty of time and space to cope.
• Make your vehicle easier to see – drive with your headlights on.
Key points summary: Looking out for yourself and others
• Pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists are vulnerable road users – they have little protection in the event of a collision with a vehicle.
• People under 16 and older people aged 60 years or more are particularly at risk as pedestrians.
• Look out for pedestrians and cyclists – give them plenty of room when approaching or passing them.
• Motorcycles can be hard to see and can be hidden by other larger vehicles – check your blindspots.
• Riders of motorcycles are 27 times more likely to be killed than drivers of other types of vehicle.
• In many crashes involving motorcycles the other driver claims not to have seen the motorcyclist.
• The risk of being killed in a crash with a truck are about three times higher than in one involving another car.
• Don’t try to compete with trucks and buses.
• Give them plenty of room – particularly when they are making a turn or braking.
Key points summary: Revision of basic hazard perceptions skills
The three basic hazard perception skills are:
• Keeping a safe distance from other vehicles.
• Selecting safe gaps when turning, crossing traffic or changing lanes.
• Scanning for hazards ahead, behind and to the side.
Key points summary: Controlling your speed
• The faster you drive the narrower your field of vision (what you can see without moving your eyes or head).
• Even at 60 km/h your field of vision is less than half of what it is when you were stationary – at 100 km/h it is less than a third.
• Reducing speed, more frequent scanning and increasing your ‘space cushion’ can help reduce crash-risk.
• Speeding increases your chances of crashing.
• Speeding increases your chances of being killed or seriously injured.
• Speeding increases the chances of killing or injuring other road users.
• To reduce your risk, obey speed limits and adjust your speed to suit the conditions.
Key points summary: Keeping a safe following distance
• The faster you drive, the longer the distance you need to stop.
• Use the ‘three-second rule’ to keep a safe distance – increase this to four-seconds or more when it is dark, wet, foggy or icy.
• Scan well ahead – look through the windows of the vehicles ahead and watch for brake lights coming on two, three or more vehicles ahead.
Key points summary: Keeping a safe distance to the sides and rear
• Try to keep at least a one metre ‘space cushion’ between you and vehicles to your left and right.
• Avoid travelling next to other vehicles if you can – especially large vehicles like trucks and buses.
• Give pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists plenty of room.
• It is difficult to maintain a ‘space cushion’ behind your vehicle as the other driver controls the space.
• If the vehicle behind is travelling too closely, slow down slightly to increase the ‘space cushion’ in front of your vehicle.
Key points summary: Selecting safe gaps: Revision
• A gap is safe where you can turn, overtake, change lanes or cross an intersection:
- Without being involved in a crash.
- Without endangering other road users
- Without other road users having to take action to avoid your vehicle.
• If a gap is not large enough, don’t go – wait until it is safe.
Key points summary: safe gaps – turning
• When turning left in a 60 km/h zone you need at least a gap of six seconds (about 100 metres) between your car and vehicles approaching from the right
• When turning right in a 60 km/h zone you need gaps of at least the following:
- Four seconds to the right (about 70 metres).
- Six seconds to the left (about 100 metres).
- Four seconds to the front (about 70 metres) – where there is oncoming traffic.
• Avoid U turns unless you have no other choice.
• If a gap is not large enough, don’t go – wait until it is safe.
Key Points summary: safe gaps when crossing intersections
• When crossing a typical intersection in a 60 km/h zone, you need gaps of at least the following:
o Three seconds to the right (about 50metres)
o Four seconds to the left (about 70 metres)
• If a gap is not large enough, don’t go – wait till it is safe.
Key points summary: Safe gaps when
overtaking
• Safe overtaking is difficult – if it doesn’t look or feel safe, then don’t do it – wait until it is safe
• Use overtaking lanes on country roads and highways to overtake safely.
Key points summary: Scanning for hazards
• Scanning means taking in the whole scene 360 degrees around your car – including any blind spots
- You need to scan constantly for hazards when driving – look and listen for hazards.
- Use a scanning routine:
- Look up to 12 seconds ahead – at 60 km/h this is about 200 metres, at 100 km/h about 500 metres.
- Look for change and movement in the traffic scene.
- Check your mirrors every 8-10 seconds
– outside and inside mirrors.
- Check your blind spots with a head check before turning or diverging right or left.
• Remember the simple hazard perception action plan:
- See (hazards).
- Think (about what might happen and what to do).
- Do (do something to stay safe).
Summary of key hazard perception and risk management skills
• The key hazard perception and risk management skills are:
• Keeping a safe distance from other vehicles.
• Selecting safe gaps when turning, crossing traffic or changing lanes.
• Scanning for hazards ahead, behind and to the side.
• Minimising the risk to yourself and other road users by
- Not drinking and driving.
- Not driving if or when affected by drugs.
- Avoiding fatigue and getting enough sleep.
- Controlling your speed and driving to suit the road, traffic and weather conditions.
- Minimising risky driving behaviour.
- Always wearing seat belts.
- Minimising distractions inside the vehicle.
- Accepting that you and others make mistakes.
• Applying the skills and knowledge in this handbook on the road will help you deal with both the routine and the unexpected situations that may arise when driving.
Thanks for all the help in this site I passed first go today
The Theory was all run off the mill stuff if you’ve read the book.
The Video however almost caught me out. There was a “Choose your gap to turn right” question. A few cars indicate to turn before they get to you but one slows down but not enough to be turning. He cancels his indicator and goes straight. I was very close to saying turn but it didn’t quite feel right. So I would suggest being on the lookout for sneaky ones like that.
I studied your website and found the test EASY to past and got my full drivers gold The questions that I found a bit hard was what is the most common crashes in NSW? a) the motorcycle crashing the back of the car b) the car crashing the motorcycle c) the car crashes the motorcycle as it turns to the other side of the road? My answer was a) I don’t know if is correct but if it not I still passed. The first part of the test was common sense all 15 questions and I could not think of 2 answers and skip them to continue with the rest of the test, later those 2 questions came back for me to answer them later at the end. The second part on touching the screen I was very lucky ‘cos I got the turning right questions and I did not touch the screen at all, but found out I had to touch the screen up to 4 times for SLOWING DOWN ones. I had the truck in front of me at the speed of 50km I had to touch the screen as soon as I saw that the truck brakes. Also the 2 cycles in front of you DO NOT TOUCH the screen to OVERTAKE them it is a trap. Good Luck to everyone out there, and thank you so very much for this site.It really help me heaps!!
Thanks to this site I have just passed my DQT! I cant remember all the questions or choices or the order of them…but they were something like this ;
PART 1:
1. If you are traveling 5km over in a 60km/h zone how likely is it that you would crash
a) twice
b) ten times
c) none
d) don’t remember
Answer: I wasnt sure about this one… but i answered twice
2. If you are travelling 70km/h, what percentage of distance do you need then if you were going 60km/h
a) 30%
b) 50%
c) 10%
d) 80%
ANSWER: 30%
3. What is the biggest distraction while driving
a) lighting a cigarette
b) talking on the mobile phone
c) other passengers
ANSWER: other passengers
4. what are the “LOW aclohol” hours
a) weekends
b) thurs friday nights and weekends
c) weekdays during daylight
d) night time
ANSWER: weekdays during daylight
5. what are the statistics of fatique related crashes in metropolitan areas
a) 25%
b) 75%
c) 90%
ANSWER: 25%
6. I had a picture where it was two laned and up ahead there was an ambulance or truck in the middle of the road (over broken lines) in the opposite direction. What should you do?
a) slow down
b) speed up
c) slow down and move to the left hand side
ANSWER: Slow down and move the the left hand side
7. Young male drivers tend to take risk when:
ANSWER: Passengers are around the same age.
8. Something about good scanning routines
9. A diagram of common car crashes and then they ask which picture shows the most common crash
ANSWER: rear end crashes
10. there was a picture of a car following a truck in daylight with fine weather and asked how far you should be travelling behind the truck
ANSWER: 3 seconds
11. What is the “3second rule” used for:
a) determine your speed
b) how quickly to answer your mobile ( this really was an option)
c) to help determine how far you should be traveeling from the car infront
ANSWER: C – the distance should be traveling from the car in front
PART 2
1. A few cars indicate to turn before they get to you but one slows down but not enough to be turning. He cancels his indicator and goes straight. I was very close to saying turn but it didn’t quite feel right. So I would suggest being on the lookout for sneaky ones like that.
2. I got 2 overtake videos, both cyclists, i didn’t overtake on either one.
3. a few “when is it safe to turn right” scenarios at night
4. travelling on a 60hm/h road and a truck is on the other side of the road and you can’t see it, but there is a motorcyclist who goes to overtake the truck, sees you and goes back behind the truck
Don’t remember the rest…. hope that helps!
MY ADVICE: read the handbook and read all of these comments and in the test make sure you don’t panic and carefully read the question and ALL of the alternatives because some of them are very similar.
In part 2 don’t panic and feel like you have to press the screen on all of the answers, be cautious (but not too cautious) for “when would you slow down” questions and wait for the realllyyyy long gaps when turning right they are pretty obvious.
also read the summary a few posts up – that helped me a lot =]
GOODLUCK!
Thanks to this website I literally just walked in the door from passing my DQT and got 100% – very first go! If you read your handbook, focus on the key point summaries, and scroll through all the hints and tips here, you honestly have nothing to worry about. My test felt absolutely breezy and there was nothing that came as a shock or a surprise. The test is more about anticipating hazards than anything, so focus on anticipating the hazards before they appear, instead of simply reacting when they do.
A girl came in and sat the DQT test after I had already started, and she was finished before I did. She failed. Sitting in the seat longer won’t automatically equal a pass (if only!) but I think this says something about rushing. Take your time! It’s not a race. Even if you have to do it again, I’d still recommend going slow, if not slower than your first time.
Anyway, I thought I’d leave a few handy tips, or at least, some observations I made during the test.
PART ONE
I’ll be honest. I didn’t know my book front to back, but you don’t need to. The key point summaries really have nearly all the information you need to pass this section, and anything that isn’t included, is either on this website or is plain common sense.
I did actually have a few statistic related questions (more than I was anticipating) and what I found, instead of trying to remember the actual figures, apply simply logic to them. For example, I had a question about the percentages of fatigue related crashes in rural areas. My options were a) 25%, b) 50%, c) 0% and d) 75%. Now, I didn’t know the actual number, but I knew that fatigue related crashes were HIGHER in rural areas than metropolitan areas, so this instantly cancels out the 0% (which is just stupid) and the 25% and 50% (because I knew it was higher, it couldn’t have been less, or the same as metropolitan areas). This happened to me quite a few times as statistics kept popping up for me, but by knowing my facts, not necessarily the actual statistic, I was able to apply logic and knock out three of the possible answers and get them all right. Handy tip if you’re face with evil numbers!
PART TWO
As I said, it’s all about anticipating the hazards. Here’s a few quick tips, most of which have been said before:
- I recommend deliberately failing your practice questions, or use them to test out the parameters of the test. It will make you see what a ‘wrong’ answer looks like and what a ‘right’ one is.
- If you’re following cyclists, be aware that you’re probably not going to touch the screen. I got two questions involving cyclists and touched the screen neither time.
- If you’re turning right, you will know when there’s a gap. If it doesn’t feel right, don’t go. I got a practice right hand turn question, and I deliberately didn’t touch the screen just to see how big the gap is. I counted an eight second gap. I recommend not touching the screen, or deliberately failing the practice questions as you get to repeat these until you get them right. It will make you feel at ease and really help you understand just how big the gaps will be in these questions. As I said, if there’s no gap or it doesn’t feel right, then don’t go. You WILL know when to go though. The gaps are huuuge.
- Also in regards to turning right questions, it says hit the screen every time you think you could go. In the instances where I DID touch the screen and could go, the second gap appeared right before the question ended. I was about to hit the screen at one point, and then it just stopped altogether. I guess all I’m saying is, don’t be too gung-ho about making a second turn if you see a second gap. The question will most likely end before you get to make it.
- There seems to be a bit of a confusion over slowing down next to trucks. The handbook does say to try and not to drive next to other vehicles, especially trucks, so in my practice question, I immediately slowed down when there was a truck next to me and then again when a van slowed down in front of me. This question came back and said I could have done it better. I only touched the screen twice in this question, and when I repeated it, I didn’t slow down for the truck, just the van, and it came back positive. So, in this instance, you don’t need to touch the screen when there’s a truck.
- Also in regards to slowing down, it’s all about anticipating the hazards. Look out for signs, corners, indicators, brakes and surprise motorbikes. If you know what’s likely to pop up in the question, you’ll be much better off.
- Most of the questions are ridiculously short. I think I spent more time reading the instructions and listen to the voice over than doing the actual test. Do read and listen to everything though, it’s very calming, and will help you not rush through things.
- I also don’t remember touching the screen anymore than twice for any individual question.
Hope that helps! I know it’s not really any new information, but hopefully the fact that I passed first go on 100% and didn’t find it all that difficult (it’s more or less a game of seeing if you can psyche yourself out in the lead up to it), will help ease the mind of someone else about to take the test and help them pass too!
Good luck!
Hi just a quick question wondering if n e one can help unsure if i got the question right. Travelling on a highway doing 100km 3 lane traffic in 100 k zone u are in between too trucks do u slow down n get behind truck on left or remain at same speed n olvertake. Confused because i thought were meant to give them plenty of room.
I DIDN’T PASS
Could please tell me about blind spot ,i didn’t get that picture with the colours,so i didn’t know wich colour was the blind spot.Somone told me that is the area outside the car not covered by mirrors.,is that right, What colour was that???
Thank you.
Going tommorow for my test been on my p’s for four years so hopefull.
pump.
Would just like to say THANK YOU to Michael and everyone’s input on this page, my green p’s are due to expire in 2 days but after reading everthing on here it gave me the confidence to sit the test (otherwise I would have just renewed my greens) and I passed first go, so thank you again to everyone on here.
Passed today thanks guys!!! First time, Two things that have been said before read the book for part 1 I read it twice and also do not touch the screen when you see cyclists.
Take your time and do the practice questions.
I found part 2 quite fast espically the breaking questions!!!
Thanks again guys!!
thank you so much to the publisher of this website with all the points and help that every1 contributed i would like to thank you for helping me and every1. saved me alot of money… hehehehe so happy thanks yous!!!!
failed on the 22nd june , rather angry my computer was crap it didnt click properly when i touched it and yeh failed, did a burn out heading out of the rta to release sum steam lol went home studied the pdf file online took notes, went back the next day so much more confident got a different computer and passed, trust me read the book through once on the second time go through and take notes on every thing that sounds important, read through your notes and you will be fine

Passed the test today first time after checking out this site just last nght. Great tips!!!
Cheers!
Passed the DQT yesterday at 1st go!!–Not bragging but trying to give hope to others
that it can be done.Reading about others who made it gave me hope too.
First, thank you very much Mr.Langley for this great website and all those
contributing, wonderful people you are, God bless you.
I don’t have good memory like others but here are some tips I found helpful:
Part1:Read the DQT Handbook several times if you have time, taking note of the key
points. Some of it is common sense.
Take your time and try to calm your nerves before starting.Going thru the intro part at the begining slowly helps.
Part2 : -Don’t overtake the cyclist–either road too narrow, bending or double lines.
-Touch screen to turn right only if huge gaps and watch out for red light and/or
anything suspiciuos.
-On slowing down parts look well ahead and anticipate, slow down for truck
blocking view, folks about to cross road, car about to enter main road …some
things you don’t usually do.
I’ll miss my green P’s but hey,i’ts life, need to progress.
Good luck y’all!
only found you website the night before my test thank you passed the first time
top stuff thats sooo true after all the years this info was thrown up,,its still doing us all well because of this i passed first gooo thanks bro
